I'm going to be useing magnum dipsys on wire next week over at Manistee. I have never used these yet, so I need a general idea on how much line to let out to get to a certain depth. If anybody has that precision trolling guide on dipsys maybe you could help me.

My spread will be 2 lead lines...7 color, and 10 on otter boards, 2 riggers off each corner and 2 wire dipsys one off each side.

I want to run it with the ring, on the best setting so it goes to the side, but not too far to interfere with the lead. On a 2 setting, how much wire do I let out to get about 50 feet down? Help me on this one. The chart doesn't tell you what it does on wire, or what it does with the ring on. Thank you.

BTW, I'm running about a 6-7 foot lead on these if that matters. Both with spindoctors and squids.

I'd guess 110' will get you pretty close on a 2 setting with 30# wire. I usually would start at 90' since the fish are usually higher early, and you want to fish above the fish, and let out more line if it takes no rips. Once I find where they are hitting I leave them there.

Here's the dipsey chart data Luhr Jensen sent me last year for them. I checked with my depth gage and those were fairly accurate with 30lb test superline. Since they sell them with the ring on I'm sure the chart is based on the ring. With a dipsey that big speed is a big factor though.

I'm guessing you'll only need to run them 4 feet off the boat rather than 6 feet like a normal dipsey. :D

To be honest, I don't like the magnums much. They have a much higher tendancy to spin on you, especially if you let them out too quickly or try to horse them in quickly. I only use them now when I know I'm trying to get down deep.

LOL Dave, looks like I was pretty close anyway. Thanks for the chart.

oh jeez, here we go.

If I remember correctly, the dipsy chart that came with the dipsy was for the dipsy without the ring. I'm probably going to run the magnums only if I need to. LAst summer I was having trouble with the dipsy spinning also, that was for the standard. I thought maybe it was because I was letting it out too fast. I'm starting to let them out by loosening the drag up on the reel and letting the dipsy go out on its own. Seems to work better, but takes longer. Theres nothing worse than trying to pull lines and you have a dipsy out that won't release. Man, what a pain.

THanks for the info. Keep it coming.

why bother with magnums if you are only running 1 diver off each side? The only reason i can see to use them is if you are running multiple divers off each side and you use it on the inside/low diver.

That or you want to run really deep.

I run one Mag., on one side, on the inside. I believe that the previous chart posted is incorrect. My method for running the Mag. is... Set on 2 and line out is equal to that of the FOW. Works for me.

Is that with, or without the ring? Sounds about right....

Why would you get a mag dipsey and NOT use the ring? Isn't the whole point of a mag dipsey be to get your divers as deep as possible?

Oh, I'm useing the ring. I'm just saying that because the chart states its for running the dipsy without the ring. So I'm just trying to clarify. I'm going to get the new trolling guide. I found a hell of a deal on it.

Per the Big Water trolling Guide

Mag Dipsy with o-ring using 30# wire on the #2 setting - 2.5 mph troll speed
50ft back - 32 feet down
75ft back - 46 feet down
100ft back - 57 feet down
125ft back - 66 feet down

I recommend the Guide, has a lot of good info about Dipsys using different types of line and settings. :)
