When there's absolutely nothing better to do,
I would like to go downtown and catch perch from
the seawall on the river. I did this with my
parents when I was a kid, and we'd get buckets full. All i can remember is it was south of Cobo,
and RR tracks were close by. Does anyone know if
this kind of fishing still exists, and where at?

Joe G,
I don't know about that specific area, but i was speaking to a guy on another website that does well in a marina near Chene park. I think that entire area has a ton of potential.

My Dad used to take our family down to the riverfront quite a bit when I was younger. Back then the fishing was pretty good all the way from Belle Isle to down past Wyandote. I remember catching alot of perch, and an ocassional pike or walleye and a few sheephead. It seems like those days are gone for the most part, with alot of the better fishing spots either off limits (liability?)
or not as productive as they once were. Now the better fishing seems to be seasonal at best. Fishing can be pretty good when the walleyes run in early spring and the silver bass run in May. Not to say you can't catch a decent fish from the shore. I have seen a few nice musky, pike, and even steelhead caught from shore.

When you are standing behind Cobo Hall facing the river, you are facing due south. The old Warehouse district is east of there (that's where all the railroad tracks were). Chene Park is a good spot for shorefishing in the old Warehouse district. A better place this time of year is at the first turnout you come to when you get onto Belle Isle, right by the Detroit Police Marine Patrol Station. There is a creek that empties into the river there, and the creek leads to the lake on the island where they plant Steelhead on the island. There is a big flat at the mouth of the creek, and you never know whats going to happen there.

Thanks for the replies....I'm just trying to come up with something to do until the boat goes in.

Nice fishing pier on the Canadian side of Belle Isle. Ample parking.
