First time sledding; thinking of taking the family to the UP next Feb. Would need to rent 2 sleds, adult and kid on each one. Thinking of Newberry or Munising areas but am open to other suggestions. Do not need super speed - just reliable and reasonably comfortable machines to rent. This would be day trips only, staying close to home base.
Can anyone recommend reputable rental shops and/or destinations?
Any advice is appreciated!

try these, i believe you will need to rent your machines from newberry or munising. book them early and try to do weekday rather than weekend due to traffic.
look into the grand marais area. it's a really beautiful area. a little less traffic.

SkiDoo http://www.exploringthenorth.com/grand/grand2.html
There are more!
If you have passengers and are just interested in casual riding ask for two-ups. Also, performance sleds are very hard to rent and cost a lot more.

Thanks for the tips and links - Yes, I always try to avoid weekends whenever possible. We just came back from Pictured Rocks and I like the Munising area even with the extra drive.
Kids are off of school for a week in Feb and I figure drive up on Sunday, enjoy 2-3 days before driving home Wed evening.
I will look into Grand Marais as well - always like new places!

there are some really nice destinations to ride to by machine. the log slides and lookout on lake superior, the birch forrest etc.
i always like having a destination when riding. something like the falls. take some pics and post them up:)

IMHO -
For a 1st trip, and with KIDS, which will certainly include the weekend, do yourself a favor and skip munising and skip pictured rocks.
Unless you don't mind getting tossed around by poor trails for a long ways.
Sorry for the bad talk on Muni....but their grooming is crap. Worst in the UP. I would rather go anywhere in the UP verses Munising. Don't get me wrong, I love the town, I love the area, I love the fishing, I love the off roading. And I love snowmobiling after they do their once a week attempt at grooming DURING the week wihout the 5 million snowmobilers in the area.
I would highly recommedn Newberry and north. Sand Point, Grand Marais, Paradise through Raco.
Large sled shop in Newberry that rents them too.
Take this with a grain of salt, but out of my 1500-4500 miles per year in the UP, I'd say I now do about 300 of those in Munising. And that's only because my Yamaha Club stays there for a week or two.
PM me if you'd like more info. Hate bashing places, but they deserve it. They earn it by pretending that it's the best place in the Midwest if not country.
Here's another tid bit, my wife loves to ride the sleds.
She WON'T go to Munising. Ever again.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from " U.P. Snowmobile Rentals". I think that was the name. They rent sleds at "agents" all across the U.P. If you want more details let me know.
Rent from someone who actually owns the sleds they are renting. The sleds will be better kept, and ready to go when you get there, and I believe the service is better.

For your 1st time sledding you may want to look at Drummond Island. Lodging with rental sleds are available, enough trails for what you want to do, and safer sledding not only for you but the folks that have been in it for a "few" years. There are a few unwritten rules of the trail that are only learned with time in the seat. Have fun, it's a great sport, a wallet drainer, but worth it!!!!

Be careful with the kids,60-80 mph on the trails is the norm...
