Since I had to work Saturday and my son had to cancel Sunday I decided to stay in Lansing this weekend and called my buddy Bill to see if he wanted to go fishing. Bill is an excellent bass fisherman who even qualified a few years ago to fish the Bassmaster Classic.

Last year I had floated a section of the Grand River between Grand Ledge and Ionia and remembered a hole we could walk to for some pretty good fishing. We got half way and because of the heat decided to fish where a nice fish had surfaced.

This is where we started. Was even an old fire pit there.

Bill caught the largest channel cat but released it before I could take a picture. This was the average size however.

We never got any farther than that spot. We caught well over a hundred fish including crappie, bluegills, walleye, catfish, rockfish, suckers and a ton of smallmouth. Many, perhaps most of them were pretty small, but it didn’t matter as we were standing in the river most of the time with a stiff wind blowing and catching fish.

We did move later and caught a ton of smallmouth bass with at least dozen this size and bigger.

The Lansing area is not known for its fishing but it just shows that if you get out and look around even without a boat you can have a fun day and catch lots of fish. Of the two walleye we caught, one was a keeper and at least 20 of the gills were over 7 inches. The biggest channel cat was about 3 lbs, although the one in the picture is only about 1 ½ lbs. and most fish were caught on pieces of crawlers and wax worms. We took the time to seine some minnows and we had some raw shrimp which caught a few, but the best bait was still crawlers and wax worms.

It was hot and lazy but the Grand River provided us with an outstanding day fishing. The river is a fish factory and I’m looking forward to the outing at the end of July in Grand Rapids. I envy you guys who live near Lake St. Clair or on the West side or in the Northern part of the state in fact almost everywhere the fishing is better than around Lansing so if your not catching fish I’d be hooking up with the guys that are and figure out what they are doing.

Is it just me or does that river look clear. Maybe its just the pic. Or maybe its just a little clearer up river from me. Looks like some great fish. We got three ten pound flatheads this weekend. I went out yesterday mourning and caught two legal walleyes, 2 smallmouths. They all went back into the river. I dont eat smallies and I can only seem to catch two walleyes per trip. I dont know what it is. I just always catch two. I need about four to fill me up. It looks like you guys where live bait fishing. Cant beat it in the grand. You never know what you might catch.

Great job, Splitshot! Thanks for the report.

If I may ask, what rigs were you using? Floats? Or were you fishing the bait right off the bottom? I've tried fishing the Grand in Grand Rapids with marginal success. I would love to hear how you work your magic.

Cubanfisherman,

Go to the east wall at 6th street. Take some night crawlers, 1/2 to 1oz barrel sinkers, some barrel swivels and some size 6 baitholders. Slide the weight on the line, tie on swivel and add a 2ft leader and tie on the hook. Break crawler in half and hook it on. Cast into water. You WILL catch fish!:)

Check your PMs, CubanFisherman.

Yes it was pretty clear. We were fishing above Ionia. Nice job on the flatheads at ten lbs. I would consider them tigers. lol

A couple of guys waded right down the middle of the river and were casting to either side and catching fish. They were casting white twister tails, a good bait for bigger fish.

Gomer, we need to talk. lol Seriously you can catch a lot of fish using that method, but other stuff works well too.

Ray,

I know a lot of other stuff works well, but its hard to beat the slip sinker and crawler rig. It catches anything and doesn't require really any skill. Just cast out, prop up the rod and watch the tip.

Nice catch !!! I have to believe that the Grand is one of the most under fished waters in the lower peninsula. I grew up less than a half mile from it and used to fish it every day in the summer. It truly is a fish factory. And the amount of walleye that is planted is nothing to sneeze at either.
