I thought this would be interesting subject.
When i am out on the ice i take along 6 rod/reels and 4 tip ups. I have all the poles rigged different. So it makes it easyier to change colors.

oh, just ice fishing rods?

4 or 5, not so much to quick change lures, but if a friend comes by, or maybe some kids. hand 'em a rod, and point them towards a hole.

and ya know, I'll see them on the water from then on. It's a good feeling:)

MGV:
If I know the lake and specie(s) that I am targeting, I will ususally keep it to 3-4 poles: otherwise I end up tangling things up. If it is a new lake/ multiple species, I will take up to 6. My thinking is like yours: easier to switch colors and/or styles. Usually, 1 or 2 eventually seem to outproduce others. When that happens, I will "fine tune", by introducing slight changes in colors or styles. For example, if pink and white produce, but chartreuse and orange don't, I will remove chartreuse and orange, and then fish two types of pink jigs or teardrops and two of white, to see if that makes a difference.

I only take 3 rods out, one noodle and two sizes of jigging rods - plus four tip ups. I still run into tangle problems too often. I'm thinking about getting some of those velcro pouches used to wrap the lure to the rod....

I probably have ten different jigging rods that I have collected over the years. When I go fishing I just use one, and take one for a back-up. Heck, I have had the same "special-order" hook on the same pole for two years and haven't used anything else for perch, gills, or crappie. <----<<<

Wish you would have asked about open water gear, I have 1,000,006 rods and reels or so it seems. For ice I take one rod and one tip up. Easier to carry but I'm also queasy from the DNR. Its easier to prove that you were not violating laws with limited poles on hand. What the officer saw through his binoculars a mile away from the other side of the lake and the truth can vary.

I own 19 rods and reels and 7 tip-ups. I usually only take 1 tip-up and four rods for whatever I plan on fishing for. Most of the time I take my panfish rods and if I happen into a walleye or bass they can handle the fish. Just have to be real easy with the 2lb test. Last year I even managed to land 4 keeper pike on them.

I carry 4 rods with me only one of them is a spincast rod, and two tip-ups. I never use all the rods though just have them incase.

I have 2 ice rods that I take out that my father made. (Killer on the perch- haven't found anything that has even 65% of the feel of these! :) ) I usually go with my father when I go out and he takes 2 for himself as well. We each take an extra rod, just in case a pike comes by and decides he's in the mood for a russian hook and breaks us off. A LOT easier to replace the rod than re-tie. We have 2 hooks on each, all attached with snap swivels so it's extremely easy to change hooks.

Heck, we've even run into cases where the perch would bite anything in the water, but only for 2 minutes, then they were gone again. We had the extra rod ready and when a fish wouldn't let go, we'd drop the one with the fish on and grab the spare- never used more than 2 rods at any given time though.

The few times I go out in deep water, I have 2 ice rods that I put a small spinning reel on. (I usually just use the same reels I use for open water. The reels I've looked at for ice rods seem really chinsy, or they're too expensive to justify the expense for the limited number of times we fish deep water.

Hard water - nine, of varying set-ups for different attack modes.

Warm water - eleven - same deal, plus, I think I need them !

Fishfoote - if you are interested in some of those velcro pouches, let me know. My wife made me a few that work extremely well, and they cost a lot less then the $4 - $6 each you will pay IF you can find them. You can IP or e-mail me if interested. They can be made any size and almost any color, and would probably run about $2 ea. plus whatever the shipping cost is.:D

i usually carry three complete rods and each is rigged up differently. depending on the species i may also bring the tip-ups. no need to carry 15 rods you cant use them all at once anyways. anyhow i pack light and usually fare well
