View Full Version : Berkley Vanish Florocarbon
Has anyone had knot strength issues with this stuff? I put some 8lb on my baitcaster that I use for buzz and spinnerbaits. Sometimes when I try to get some extra distance on the cast the leader and the bait goes a flying. I use the improved sinch(sp) knot that I use on other rigs, and dont have this problem. I check the line periodically and have had others Ive fished with watch me tie my knot to ensure that it is not user knot error. Just curious if anyone had similar problems or would another knot work better with flourcarbon.

I usually use a Palomar knot but make sure you wet the knot when cinching it down. Personally, I think Vanish is garbage but that’s just my opinion. I’ve broken 8 lb off setting the hook on a jumbo Perch. Berkley Vanish………….no thank you. :)

Stuff is junk. I've had success with Stren's flouro but I'm sure threre's better out there than stren. I threw out my vanish after 3 trips of break-offs

Try P line . You'll like it much better. Berkley may make goos soft plastics but crappy lines.

10 pound Stren works pretty well, at least it hasn't broken off on any perch yet! :xzicon_sm
Thanks everyone, I should have asked this sooner Ive lost 3 lures from breakoff:mad: . I need to switch line before it gets even more expensive.

I've had better luck with Vanish than most of you guys seem to have had...don't know why. Still, after fishing both Vanish and PLine ("flouroclear"?) I do prefer PLine.
In terms of knots, I think any flouro or flouro/mono hybred is both more slippery AND more brittle than plain mono. Makes wetting the line before tying a MUST. Also, IMHO, an Improved Clinch simply isn't a good knot for that type of line for the above reasons. Regardless if you use Vanish, PLine, or any other flouro, use a Palomar or another knot called a Jansik Special. Zero break-offs with either of those knots in 4 years of fishing flouro lines.

Depending on the application, I typically just use Stren mono and if I want the floro, I’ll tie on a Seaguar’s florocarbon leader. The Seaguar’s seems to be pretty good stuff but again, wet your knot when you cinch it. :)

I use Yo-zuri flourocarbon. Use it on spinning and baitcasting. Some people have trouble with flourocarbon on spinning reels but I use 10# and its fine for me. I fish lots of tubes and flukes.

My friend and I were bass fishing last year and he kept snapping his line on fish. It was 10lb vanish. He doesnt use it anymore.

P-Line, Gamma, Seagaur. They all make great florocarbon lines. Vanish is

And as stated, learn to tie a palomar... simple knot, 100% line strength, no break offs.

For applications were you are using spinnerbaits and buzz baits your best bet would be a mono line. You get a little more strecth out of it then with floro and when the fish hits a moving bait it will give them time to get it better. I personnaly like seaguar floro , but i have recently switched to Gamma Edge. It is very expensive, but when I am fishing a tournament with a $10,000 first prize on the line I dont care how much my line costs. When using floro a palomar knot is a must. If you are stuck on fishing the floro for you fast moving baits I would increase the poundage like up to at least 10 or even 12. Your break off problem should go away. Good luck

I second the p-line or seagaur.
When tying my muskie leaders with 80# and 100# flouro, I use a Centauri knot.

I've never had a problem with it.
I don't see why it wouldn't be a good knot for lighter flouro as well. But I've used a palomar knot for my light flouro so far. Maybe I'll change that.

I've used vanish for years and never had a problem. Most of the people fishing Port Huron on the wall use it as leaders and don't have a problem
Not saying you can't catch fish on it but IMO, it is at the low end of the floros that are available these days.
I changed up the line over the weekend and fished a lot with no breakoffs:)

Been using Vanish for leader line for a couple years now. The only thing I have noticed is that once in a while it will have a weak spot in the spool. You can feel the difference in the line between your fingers as it comes off the spool.
Have wondered more than once why it broke so easily on a snag. Yet I have had a leader last through multiple walleye without a problem. A few weeks ago landed a fat 42"+ muskie on the DR with a 6# Vanish leader while jigging for walleye. Go figure!!
Now that this spool of leader line has been used up, I am going to try something different such as P-Line.

I run fourteen pound mono on my bait casters when casting fast moving baits. I have tried fluorocarbon leaders, but have noticed no difference in catching fish. I think baits like spinnerbaits, and buzz baits do not give the fish the opportunity to think about it. I have however had very good success with fluoro leaders when fishing bait for walleyes, pike, bass. It does seem to me to make a difference in that application. Just my thoughts on the issue.;)
