Missed my wall hanger on Saturday. Fishing near Hale, MI I had a fish that had to be over 30lbs.

My situation was I have been experimenting with different lures, hooks, minnows, etc. Of all the lines to hit it chose the smallest perch minnow I had. I had a simple steel leader and a treble hook, topped with that small minnow. That pole was in my left hand. I picked it up to feel any hits, but was focusing my attention on the pole on my right.

I felt the tug so I quickly shifted my weight to look down into the water and almost fainted when the all I could see was it's head. At that point it jerked ahead and set the hook for me. I didn't realize what was happening yet. It took a bit of line, but the drag was set too high and it's head came straight up.

At that point it was pointing straight up at me, and you could easily have fit a bowling ball inside it's mouth. Then it jerked it's head back down and took some line. I had perfect visibility of it's entire body for a couple seconds as it took line and straightened out.

Then as quick as it started I remember watching it close it's mouth and *poof* it got off. Or so I thought . I pulled up my line quickly while watching my other line to see if it would hit it.

Then I realized that it bit my steel leader clean off. No hook left...

Moral of the story is I will always use a large swedish pimple or spoon to act as my buffer zone to keep those teeth away from anything it could cut. live and learn.
