WALLEYE MIKE

Heres a report I got from another site about GULP.
WOW! Works almost as good as real crawlers, not just on harnesses for eyes, but panfish too! Got sick of the panfish robbing me of my real crawlers. Decided to try some chunks of pumpkinseed Gulp crawlers I brought with us on a northern Mich. fishing trip. Threaded about a 1/2" piece up a hook and that worked pretty good. Lots of hits, but too tight against the hook barb. Lots of misses. Next I put same size chunk on the shank of a treble. Better, but still not right. Finally cut the 1/2" chunk into thin quarters and put the strips on the treble. That was the ticket!!!! Between my son and myself, catching anywhere from 300-400 panfish, we used less than 2 Gulp crawlers over 5 days, even with experimenting on the rig. Tried the same thing with an identical crawler colored regular plastic worm and just a few nips. No fish. The scent of Gulp DEFINITELY works!!!

My neice loves the Gulps too. She got tired of the panfish stealing her bait so she found some Gulps that look like little grubs. No need to cut or rebait often.
Gulp is all I use on the Walleyes. I don't spend as much time rebaiting so I think I catch more. Just have to check for weeds on the harnesses, Gulp is almost always there. You just have to make sure that the hooks are on one side of the worm for more hook exposure. Love the Gulp. Thanks guys at Michigan-Sportsman.

Mike, I'll be the first to say I'm a believer in artificial baits. I'm not so sure about gulp because I don't use it much, but for the last 35 years, I've been using 3 inch white and yellow MisterTwister Tails. The results have been many many limits over the years. 95% of the fish in my photo gallery this year came from MisterTwister Tails...the other 5% percent was on real night crawlers with gulp. This photo was Saturday's catch and all the fish in this picture were caught using the head of a crawler tipped with a MisterTwister Tail. No doubter here. ;) ;)

Do I have to clean ALL THOSE!!!!!
(By the way, that's a five man limit with SwampRat1965, Due51, LittleDue15, Black Fly and his brother. Just thought I'd clear that up before the lynch mob started in).;)

You guys have thin skin. Why do you even spend time thinking about what the "Limit Lynch Mob" thinks? If you were truly poaching then that's a different thing altogether.
Nice catch! As a spokesman for the "Jealous Mob", I think I need to spend some time on your boat picking your brain:lol: . So much to learn, so little time. Due51 is making up for that frustrating spring on the river.
I'm gonna have to try that Twister Tail trick. It might prevent all the worm dirt spills on my boat carpet. What a pain to clean up!
Congrats on the fine day!

I keep my crawlers in a "Bait Canteen" with moss now, for the same reason ... works like a charm! Cleaner on the fingers too.

One of the things I do is take them out of the black dirt, put them in a strainer and rinse, put in moist newspaper clippings with a little coffee grounds. Vary clean.

Got my limit first with Gulp
I used Gulp and had my bait in the water alot longer than my brother in law, who was spending time replacing after every smerch bite. Oh- and then Pops dumps over the nite crawler container and dumps the dirt all over the carpet :dizzy: .
I like them!

Personally I prefer worm dirt all over the carpet it helps to camouflage the coffee stains, smashed up worms, and dried up minnows from previous trips.

OK, maybe I’ll have to try another experiment. Last time I set up 2 lines for my son and matched that same set up for my 2 rods. He used real and I used Gulp. I switched over to real after he had his limit and I had one. :(

This is going to go down as "The Great Debate": REAL V. GULP
Pretty soon it will join the likes of Rompola, Trost, Cougars, and the likes:hide:

At my dock I cut a little chunk of Berkley Walleye scent worm and a chunk of gulp. I threw both chunks to a large bluegill. The fish held onto the gulp for a while then spit it. the chunk of Berkley worm was eaten end of story. just a silly observation .

I'm a doubter. I've tried and tried the Gulp, it just doesn't work for me. If it works for you, hey more power to ya. But live crawlers all the way here for me.:)

Does Gulp make a artificial minnow that works for perch? Now thats what I am waiting for....

Amen to that brother. The price of Perch minnows is getting ridiculous.

Up here Gents on Saginaw Bay, Gulp ! works just fine. ;) 7" Turtle Backs or the 6" Nightcrawler both in the "Pumpkinseed" or "natural" color strung on a harness kicks butt. I usually go 50/50 on the rods when using harnesses, real on one side, Gulp ! on the other and have been averaging pretty close to an equal split on the Walleyes. One thing I notice as an added bonus is less farm fish (Sheeps) on the Gulp ! :D I have no problem using these on my outings now. Now with the warmer temps in the water, 70 degrees or so, it is turning into a crank bite a bit more though. Hot-N-tots , D.D. Rapalas, spoon rigs etc. starting to outproduce the harnesses for me.

OK Neal, so the kid can out fish me. I still bet I’m a better net man though! I get lots of practice! :p

I think it would be a good idea to put KBKrause on your boat for a few weeks for some net training. We went out yesterday evening, and although he did successfully net my fish, he had one bouncing off the rim like a Shaq free throw.
Toward the end of the trip, KB mentioned this thread and that he had some Gulp crawlers, so we rigged one up. We got a couple hits but no hook ups. I think hook placement is critical when using them, but what do I know.
We did manage 4 good size walleyes and a array of other species. On the way out we saw a Large Musky come out of the water in front of us twice. also while I was bringing in one of those pesky perch, all of a sudden it felt like I had a snag, when it broke free and I brought the perch in it's tail had fresh teeth marks on it....Pretty cool stuff and a great evening fishing.
THANKS AGAIN KB!!!!!

Have used nothing but GULP the last 2 yrs. Will never buy another crawler unless I have to. Put a Gulp green tutleback down on a crawler harness last night, and had 2 walleye in the boat in about 15 minutes, and most of the time was spent trying to set the rod on the board with all the bouncing we were getting.

Good times.
Though I've had sucess jigging with gulp on a northern Ontario trip, the S/E Michigan results are yet to come in. :)

Do yo Gulp users hide the hook or do you leave it in the rubber. The Phasing of that question will get some smart A#@ remarks, but bring-em on. Also, when using the twister tail, is that on a single hook harness or can you use a double.

yes that is a single hook on the harness...never tried it on a double hook...i've been using a single hook set up for 35 years...i use it for so many reasons...its great when the perch are just stealing your worms...cheaper than gulp or crawlers...i use 1 or 2 for a 1 man limit, unless a pike or musky eat it...it goes through the weeds and won't come off like a real crawlers do or can...your bait is in the water longer for more fish (ya hope) to see...when the fish are biting light you can watch(slight pole bend)or feel them hanging on,drop it back and they will grab it...its fast and easy to put on your hook...so far this year i've been out 8 times and boated over 100 walleyes and have used 12 dozen crawlers...35 years ago we went through 17 dozen crawlers in one trip...the perch just cleaned us out...it may not be for everyone out there but it may be worth a try for ya.

I always thread the gulp on the harness hook and leave the tip exposed. I was using 2 hook harnesses last night. Second hook enters the gulp so the line is tight and doesn't bend the worm. Similar to how Hotwired sets up his stingers for jigging, except I don't thread the second hook through the gulp, just run it along the outside and only the hook shank is buried. Will try to take a picture next outing.

Geez , you guys get all technical...we just thread the head(just like real crawler) and leave the rest free..worked on bass in stagnant ponds like newburgh for 50 years and still works on fish today(see pic of pike taken at kent earlier this year).......Wench takes crappie all over the state drifting the same set up

Hey there Swamprat nice picture of all them walleye and I really like your crawler setup, nice little bit of crawler for scent and the rrst plastic.. What I really like about it is that there is not to long of a tail with those twister tail which in turn no short strikes and if the fish are hitting short they still will get hooked up.. I just got back in town from 7 day rest from visiting family and cat fishing out of a cat fish pond and I am looking forward to getting back out there and catch some walleye.. Cya Slick
