Hey fisherman,
im new to the area and looking for some info on some hot bass fishing lakes with public access. If anybody could help me out that would be greatly appreciated. If it helps, im in South Lyon and the only lake i fished was Kent Lake. Any local knowledge would be great.!

There are tonsssssss of little lakes all over. Get yourself a atles of michigan counties. It will have all of the lakes that have a public acess marked clearly.

Welcome to the site.
I've been reading some fantastic reports of Smallmouth fishing up and down the Detroit River. There's launches on the east side (St. Jean & Alter Rd). As well as down in Ecorse and Wyandotte. At lunchtime today I drove over to the Delray launch (which is just next to Historic Fort Wayne) at the end of Livernois. That outs you south of the bridge across the river from the Sand Piles in Canada.

Geez, pick any lake near ya, those lakes in Oakland county are ususally loaded with nice bass. For world class smallies, the St.Clair, Detroit river, Lake Erie water system is hard to beat.

You are in South Lyon, Try Chemung in Howell, Woodland lake in Brighton, Whittmore Lake is good, or come out my way and give Wolverine lake, Orchard or Cass a go. Pontiac lake is a good bass lake also. and if you go there, stop at K-D Outdoors on M-59 and support a member of this site.

When you go back and look at the original msg it seems that "#1Shot" did not mention big lakes or little lakes, just public access.
While not a lake there are a lot of bass, and some of them huge, in the Detroit River. Lord knows that I have shaken more than my fair share off of pencil plugs and spoons while out there wirelining this year.

Where would you get an atlas of the counties?

this site you can get one of two, or both, kinds of maps. michigan counties atlas or fishing maps. i just bought the southwest fishing guide and love it. tells you lake info, dnr stocking and survey data, directions, and hot spots to fish in each lake. pick one up, it's worth it to have when not fishing familiar lakes.

If you ever fish Chemung, try the little dip straight across from the public launch. It curves in just a little, nearer to the road. I 'think', it's the deepest hole on the lake, but I'm not 100% certain of that. What I do know though is, that hole held some very heavy duty 'somethings', that powered us to death. And it also seemed to be quite the popular location on the lake toward evening hours. I've only been there 'once', and I should have gone back!

Where would you get an atlas of the counties?
Most of the big-box "outdoor sports" stores will carry mone of more of the county atlas books. Some of them will have the lake map books. Just pick the section of the state you want to concentrate on.
If you are a member of AAA Road Service then pick up the county maps from one of their offices. They have pretty good county maps and will show most of the access sites on lakes and rivers.

Also don't forget about the Huron.

That's right, don't forget the the Huron, I've pulled alot of nice smallies out of there this year. I've also pulled a bunch of bass out of Belleville recently. Don't restrict yourself to public waters, alot of the smaller lakes in Oakland and Washtenaw Counties can be dynamite for largemouth. I haven't had a whole lot of trouble getting permission to fish private ponds this year.

Hey you may also want to look up some guides , I know there is one on the Raisin and one on the Huron. Both of them can put you on some fish.
