We fished the mouth of the river and actually did our best fishing just into lake Huron. We were handlining and pulled two limits of walleyes. No particular colors seemed to matter all that much. Small Rapalas were all that we tried. Fished from 10-12:30 with the average size being just over 15 inches. After doing this I have three questions:
1. Does anyone else not like handlining as much as regular fishing? For me, it seems less like the sport of fishing and more like harvesting walleyes.
2. Has anyone tried to run a bomber handlining? I tried it for one pass last night after I had filled my limit. I ran it at the top of the shank and off a 8 foot leader. The fishing had slowed down a ton by this point, so I don't think it means it won't work. The action on the lure looked awesome and I was hoping it would lead me to some bigger fish. I plan on trying it again next time I go out.
3. Do you guys use snap swivels on both ends of your leaders?

another limit pulled in about 2 hours just into the mouth of the river. We were in much shallower water (10-15fow). We still aren't getting fish over 20 inches though. great fishing out there, if you are hesitant about fishing the river, don't be. Some people on this site make it seem very challenging method of fishing and it really isn't that hard to learn the basics. I'm sure its hard to master (which I'm nowhere near) but to get out there and fish the rivers is easier that I had earlier perceived.

That night we also got a three man limit plus some in 45 min. We through some of the 15inchers back to get bigger. A few over 20inches landed also.
sweatyspartan I have used a bombers, yozuri, and other different kinds also. bombers and yozuri's they are about like a number 13 in retrospect to the original floaters and I have caught alot on them also. Also I use small snaps on both sides of my leaders.
It really does not matter what color you use out their but we found out for the past two weeks that they have been hitting on a darker lure more so than the lighter ones like a month ago. We have been catching them and a lot of them on the new brook trout more so than anything else.

we were running a brook trout also and the one bigger fish we had broke us off. Oh well. I experimented with a bomber on the top lead of my shank on about an 8 foot lead and picked up a fish that was about 19 inches. Thats bigger than the average fish we were catching.

Right now we are running 30 and 15 ft leads. and also we use 30# line that does not stretch. Since we started using that at the end of the year we have not had one lure brake off from a fish....

do you lose any action on the lures with such heavy test? Thats what I'm afraid of

We do not lose an action at all that I know of. Everytime we go out we get our limit between a half hour to an hour and half. We rarely are out their any longer unless my buddy and I bring some guys that have only done it a couple of times. But if I were you I would go out and get some MASON 30# line. You can get it at Lakeside fishing. It is also nice because if you get a snag it will come out more often than the lighter line would. Or you will just drag something up. But if you do not want to loose any more lures like that, than I would get this line.
