Hello everyone,

I am interested in learning taxidermy. Can anybody recommend a book that may help me learn about taxidermy? Also, can someone share an opinion or two about the school in Alpena? I am interested in learning walleye and deer mounts. Any help would be appreciated.

Schools are great if you have the time and money to attend them. If you want to learn then try VanDykes or Mckenzie and order videos and go to it till you get good. Also taxidermy.net is a good place to learn but it is full of Jack ***es just do alot of searching there and chances it is covered. I dont do fish but if you need more info pm me and I will hook ya up.

I'm sure you can't go wrong with Alpena. I have heard good things about them. I personally started doing fish as a hobby. I taught myself with books and videos.

Don't be afraid to join the Michigan Taxidermist Association. There are seminars at most of the meetings and four days of seminars at the convention in March.

Lots of free advice and many offerings of one-on-one lessons for little money or donations.

We have several World Champion Taxidermists in the State of Michigan.

I agree with ebowhunter. I went to a school down south. I did taxidermy for a few years and thought I put out a nice mount. I joined the MTA and went to the state comp in GR. I found out how much I didnt know. I kept going to the comp and sitting in on seminars and my work got better to the point that I took second in the masters division with a Walleye. I now do fish only and wholesale work for other taxidermist. If it wasnt for joining the MTA I would still be turning out a so so mount. Most of the people in the MTA are more than willing to share info. or help out if you run into a problem. If you ever have any questions feel free to e-mail me. bigfish90@netzero.com
