Any updates on ice conditions for higgins lake. Plan on going out this weekend
TTF,
A friend of mine was up there last weekend. The North end still has open water, the South end is good.
Welcome to the site.

Not for the weak at heart up at the North end. Just got back and even the ice thats 5-6 inches looks bad. Did see 2 guys come off East st this morning and go out onto the clear dark ice about a quarter mile out. They picked there way but man that's nuts. If they get snow on it tonight SOMEONE WILL go thru this weekend. South Basin pretty good ice but still not the best. Try to access directly from the nearest shore you are fishing. Maplehurst good passed the drop, Gerrish fair, West DNR fair about 100yds , West St. about the same but by all means think safety. Lots of places offering Fish Frys during lent. Take care!

Thanks to everyone who replied. Good info. Just got back from fishing. We had about 6 to eight inches where we we're fishing. About 1/4 off of Lady slipper. Did not catch one Fish!!! The group i was with caught about 40 to 50 between them. The only redeeming factor was that I was successful in the Turkey drawing.. Thanks again and safe fishing to all.

Was up there yesterday. Did not fish but just checked out the ice!! I went to the west end boat launch and there were people fishing about 100 yds out for perch i guess. They were using slammers up next to shore to try for the browns but nobody was catching anything. Ice there was fairly safe. A guy told me that he was on the north shore in the morning and fell through 2 inches of ice. 2 inches is not very much, but i guess its only in 3 ft. of water, but im not getting wet. Was planning on going up there sunday, dont know where i want to go yet.

Well my total is one. A year ago yesterday I caught 167 in about 5 hrs. The most I've seen is 30 something during the day. I'm not sure if they've been getting them at night but I've seen some submersible lights as I've left at dark a couple times. The smelt grounds in front of Birch Lodge hasn't produce for me yet and there are no shanties there at all this year.
