KY hunters will have several more days to hunt deer and turkey with a crossbow this fall. Dates were recently finalized to run Oct 1 to 22,and Nov 11 thru Dec 31 2006. This new season structure incorporates some of the fall firearms seasons for deer and turkey. For many years, crossbows have been legal to use during deer or spring turkey firearm seasons.
The expanded season will add about 30 more days for crossbow use, depending on how each year's calendar shift affects the season.
KY biologists don't expect the expanded season to have much effect on the deer harvest, but the opportunity certainly exists that more deer may be taken with a crossbow. Last season, about 600 deer were reported taken by crossbow,a very small percentage of the total 112,000 or so harvested in the 2005-2006 season.
