View Full Version : Mallard Eating Monster In The River
Thunderhead

While fishin for cats the other night, the guy next to me saw something grab a baby duck from a group swimming on the backside of the river just before dark. Splash and it's gone.
Not 1/2 hour later, a couple of tame, white ducks , followed by a full grown Mallard came swimming by and something grabbed the mallard and pulled it under !
It was BIG whatever it was. A flash of white and boiling water and it was gone.
I grabbed the biggest sucker minnie I had and tried to get whatever it was to hit that, but he must have been full.........lol
Whatcha think it was ? Pike maybe ? An Alien ? :)
It's a big fish whatever it is. Headin back down there tonight to try and hook'em.
On a side note, my partner had something grab his minnie the other night that took off in a straight run, spooled him to the knot and broke off 50lb test........he couldn't do a damn thing.
No turning whatever he had on. Run and snap.

Was it swimming backwards? Did it smell of rotten flesh maybe.
I have a couple of theories as to what it might be, but there is no way I am posting them on a public board. Ya know the govt could be monitoring this board and all.:coolgleam

If I was a betting man I'd wager you've got a hungry pike in action there.
Pretty common occurence on our lake - between the eagles, osprey, snapping turtles and pike the young ducks and geese get thinned out over the summer. I've even read accounts of pike attacking cattle in streams and lakes!

Big pike or muskie and maybe even a big cat. I'm sure everyone here has seen the picture of the flathead with the big red ball in his mouth.

Not sure if there are Muskie in your area but they have been known to eat an adult Mallard.

It's an Anaconda.
They made a movie about that thing starring Ice Cube.

Guy's I'm telling you it was a cougar that learned to swim underwater. Wait a minute I forgot we aren't supposed to have cougars in Michigan.........

I've seen young ducks get pulled under more than once on Lake St. Clair. Pike or Muskie.

Do not over look a large size Snapping turtle. I have seen snappers take down ducks, chickens and my toes.

You'd better buy some ducklings for bait.

we use to use ducky's for pike and musky.tie tri-hooks to their little feet..but not now..the tree huggers would *****...:D
I'd go with Pike or Catfish. I know up in Ontario where we fish, a pilot informed me that the now 1 baby loon was once a party of 4 and as the days went on the number got smaller. He also said that full growns had disappeared too. But there is a couple of Bald Eagles on that lake too, so who knows. But I do know that the Pike will eat anything it can get it's teeth into. I hope you end up catching this monster, I'd love to see some photos of it. That really must have been something to see, right there in front of you. WOW, I'da flung the biggest thing I had in the box too with hopes of catching it, cat or pike or other.
I sure wouldn't be swimming in the water you saw this.....especially skinny dipping!!!! :tdo12: :bloos:

This has brought up the perfect time to tell a TRUE story. When I was a kid me and some of my friends would camp at these ponds just down the road from me. We'd fishing, swim, drink beer and well...be boys!! Well we were swimming and one of our friends had on these god awful leopard print swim trunks!!! We gave him **** for that for hours. Well he finally got pissed off and ripped the things off....in a tent of course....and threw on some boxers. Well he took the damn things and threw them in the pond and I kid you not less than a minute later a HUGE pike came up and nabbed them and pulled them under. I HAVE NEVER AND AGAIN WILL I EVER SEE THAT AGAIN!!! :lol:So I say it's a pike.;)
So what's the point of that story, is it that I shouldn't be swimming in my leopard skin bannana hammock?

Hey TH, with my off the wall theory you have just as much chance of catching "it" with a medium size bait as you do with tying on a side of beef. Besides you might catch something else along the way to take the skunk off.

Man, if that was caught through the ice and it still looks undigested I wonder how long it takes a fish to fully digest it.

I saw a pike try to take a goose under and it was a real fight! I was with some friends walking along the Doubs River in France and saw this "V" shape in the water and then this huge pike stuck its head out and grabbed a goose from behind. The goose turned around and started fighting back not to mention making an awful racket, but the pike kept coming. A couple of times the goose was almost entirely under water and when the fight was over, there were feathers everywhere but the goose managed to get away. The pike just kept hanging out right under the surface and never left more than 3 or 4 yards from where it attacked it. Craziest thing I ever saw.
