While chasing some auto parts for my sons truck, I instictively looked down the block to the Ole Rice's bait shop on the East side of Hartford. I'll be danged, a new sign. Didn't really need anything but stopped anyways. Seems that the son of the late Mr. Rice has decided to continue in his fathers footsteps. After about a 1/2 hrs B/S sesson and spending a double-sawbuck, $20.00 dollars for you younger people, I went home with more hooks, snaps, swivels and slip bobbers then I'll use this year. And YES, his prices are a little higher than the big stores but it's worth it.
Welcome back, "Rice's Sporting Goods", and thanks.

Martin

Howdy-

It's good to know the little guys aren't giving up without a fight! ;)

I, too, will spend a little more to support the independents.

Good to hear!

I'll almost always be willing to spend a few more bucks in a small independent shop. My family has owned flower shops since 1948. It's changed a lot over the years. Now you can get holiday flowers and plants and such at nearly every grocery store, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. They buy their stock by the truckload and end up selling it at or below what the wholesale cost is for the little guy. They use that stuff just to bring people into the stores and break even or maybe even take a little loss just in the hopes that while you're there you'll spend a few more bucks on their higher profit items. That's business I guess. But it's a drag because the people that shop strictly price forget about the SERVICE end of the deal. If you want good quality personal SERVICE it's worth a few more dollars. I've been out of that business for years but I have other family members that still own or work in flower shops and it's a tough dime to turn anymore.

I'm with Les, it's great to hear there the little guy is fighting to stay in the game.

I worked at a big box retailer for years before my current employment, and I hated every minute of it. They say its about service and giving the people what they want, but it boils down to money money money. They couldn't give a rats a.. about people. Take walmart for example. They will move into a smaller town and chase all the small bussiness out, and then when the people leave because they can't find work, the walmart packs up and leaves. And what's left, nothing. They have destroyed a lot of small towns doing this. Besides, who at a walmart or whatever, is going to tell you what hatch is going or what hole to fish? There is just not that knowlege base at a big box retailer....
