A 7 foot medium action Ugly Stick rod with a Pfluegar Trion baitcaster spooled with 14 lb. fireline.....
Nice set up, kind of expensive reel but with baitcasters the more you spend on them the better they cast and fish.
The main key is to find what works best for you.

My 2 favorites are both by shimano. The old Curado, haven't tried the newer version so I can't compare them, and the bantam citica.
I agree that the more money you spend, the better the reel is.

:yeahthat:!!
I have an Abu Garcia C3 and an Abu Garcia Torno. They work wonderfully. I learned on the Shakespeare Alpha, and getting my first quality baitcaster was the most blissful moment of my fishing career.

Abu's (5), Quantum (2), Pinnacle (1) and two Cabela's Prodigy. The Prodigy are the smoothest/best casting of the bunch. The Abu's are the "work horses". It's true the more You pay, the better they are - but for $100.00 the Prodigys are the best value going - primo reel ! Bob

ABU C-4 ( a real work horse)
ABU Record (new this year, great reel!)
Quantum Accurist pt (good reel)
Lews RB-4 (from before they sold the company, another work horse)
Shimano Bantam (real old, a piece of junk)
ABU EON (another piece of junk, guess that why they don't make it anymore)

Shimano Scorpion the Japanese version of the Curado, its higher quality in every way (dont know about the new curado though). Can buy it important for $150, which is a steal.

I have 4 ABU Garcia 5600 C I use them for walleye trolling and some salmon trolling but they are sweet to use.
When casting I use spinning equipment.
