I went to my local bait shop last week and had them put new line on my ultra light Shimano spinning reel. I was fishing a tourny on Sunday, 2 days after the line was put on. On my 5th cast of the morning, I look down, and the biggest birds nest is sprouting out of my reel. Line everywhere. Luckly, I had brought my other reel with me, so I could keep fishing. My question is, did I do something wrong? I have had this reel for over 10 yrs, it is still in great condition, and I have never had this happen before. I have not gone back to the bait shop yet, allthough I want to today because I want to go fishing tonight and I want to use this reel. I had a long discussion with the old timer there about what line to put on, and we put on P-line, 6#. Should I make them put line on again or should I just buy line and do it myself? What do you guys think?
Thanks all:fish:

Do it yourself! Cheaper and if you get a 300 yrd or so spool... you'll have enough line to do it twice.

Yeah I thought I should just do it myself, its been awhile since I changed it and I wanted to fish right after work today, thats why I thought about bringing it back to them. It was only $3 to have them put it on.

p-line is very strong, but it is stiff and not user friendly at all on spinning reals and he probably put too much on.
i fish with guys that swear by it, but they have the same problem
from time to time. try spiderwire supermono in 6# you won't have that problem and it is almost as strong. I use McCoys mean green.
it is super limp. and i love it. but I have to order it on the internet because i can't fisnd anyone that sells it close to me.

The only time I've had that happen has been right after putting new line on a reel. IMO - Its caused by the memory of the line. Your winding it onto a smaller diameter spool from a larger one. Winding it backwards offa the storage spool makes it worse. A trick taught to me many years ago from an older timer was once I had my new line spooled, wrap the spool with a rubberband and remove it from the reel. Take a large flat bowl/tupperware container and put enough steaming hot tap water in it to cover the spool. *The larger the bowl/container the slower the water will cool. Put the spool into the water and let it sit until the water cools. This will effectively change the memory of the line on the spool to that of the new spool! Not only does it pretty much eliminate the birdnest issues it makes for some very, very smooth, long and quite casting! ;)
BTW - I've been using P-Line (#6 thru #10) for more than a few years now on my old Mitchell 300's and its some great stuff!
I buy my P-line in the 600 yard spools from BPS or Franks. Its cheaper than buying two 300 yard'ers!
As already mentioned, dont put to much line on! See a lot of guys' with UL rigs. They dont hold a lot!

Yeah, the reel says it will hold 110 yds, and I told them to only put on 100 at the very most, I would prefer a little less. There was some young kid doing it, and he said "I can get at least 100 on this". I said no, you dont understand, I only want 100 in the most and he just did his thing.
Chad, I didn't ask about spiderwire, but I originally wanted fireline on it. They told me it would cut grooves in my guides, so I shouldnt use it.
Sounds like no fishing for me tonight :(

Update.......
Well, I wanted to at least let the baitshop know that "the kid" (thats what they all called him) had screwed up my reel. So I bring it in and show it to them, the old timer checks it out and asks "why did you want 8# test on this little reel, and why did you want over 100 yds on it?". Well, there is the problem. I told them that I asked for 6# and less than the 110 yds the reel says it will hold. So the old timer says he will fix it up for me. Strips all the line off, puts the 6# I wanted on and brings it back out. He said he only put about 80 yds on it, which is fine with me, alot of my fishing is in rivers, and if I have a fish run for 80 yds, chances are Im not bringing it in anyways. So I went down to one of my "secret spots" on the Grand River, and start to walk through the woods to get to the river. Forgot the bug spray, so dont even get to wet my line once. Man, those skeeters were bad :yikes: On the way home I really want to try out the reel, so I stop at one more place. No skeeters, and only 1 other guy there, so I talk to him for a minute and start to fish. Then the crowd shows up, these 2 guys are fishing right next to me, crossing my line and generally pi$$ing me off. Everyone is fishing crankbaits, so I switch to a senko and WHAM a nice 3# smally. Feels good to catch a fish when no one else is :evilsmile . No problems with the reel, and ended with 2 nice smallies in about 1 1/2 hours. :fish:

Well at least they took care of the problem, that shows something for that shop, and good job on the fish.:D
