In my charter business, I can go through a lot of crawlers in a short period of time. Yet during other times, get stuck with both the mess and hassle of taking care of flats of crawlers I know I'll never finish. Plus talking the wife into letting me store these dirty flats in our home refrigerator is another story all together. This was the topic of a conversation I had a few months ago with our local bait shop owner, and he seems to have solved quite a few of these problems in one fell swoop. As well as passing along a great deal.
He is now selling 1 gallon Zip-loc bags of crawlers for $12.50 for 10 dozen. And there are a lot of other cool reasons to buy crawlers packed like this besides the great $1.25 per dozen price tag. They store great, he's had them in the bags now for some time with no bad effects. No more refrigerator mess, with the plastic being cleaner and storing better then the dirt stained styrofoam containers. And you can see what your buying without diging or wondering about whats in the box under the dirt. And, you can throw them on any ice or cold water in the boat cooler or livewell, and they stay dry, separated and in great shape. And 10 dozen is the perfect number of crawlers to work with and use up, without worrying about filling out adoption papers on the remaining few.

Dan, I get crawlers by the flat also when I need them. I have larger thick walled styroform boxes, little more than a foot square. They fit nicely on one shelf in the fridge in the garage along with my beverages. When I need some for fishing I do what you do about the shedded newspaper. Nice and clean.
But the quanity discount is great for those wanting 10 dozen.

Thats pretty much the deal. They save on the flats, cartons and cups when they sell them to you in a 10 cent Zip-Loc. But you save anywhere from .50 cents to .80 cents a dozen, it's a good deal all around.

Ya, I'm still using the shredded newspaper in the quart pail on the boat, but this will be my new way to store the crawlers waiting on death row in the refrigerator. :) Michigan Sportsmans bait and tackle on M-25/center Ave is the place for the bag deal and the price is good for everyone.

Dan,
We buy crawlers from a bait shop by Lake Eries 10 doz. $10.00 and they come in a little cooler. We just take them out and put them in the Hagens crawler cooler. Clean and always cool.

That's a great deal alright. Wish it wasn't so far away. The gas money spent getting too Erie, might cut into my overall savings I fear. ;) But I do love places that go that extra mile to please the customers though.

Well, thank you for that info Lucky Dog. Always enjoy your input on my posts, there always helpful and usually querulous. ;)
I'll be stopping by there tomorrow and the next few days getting ice before my charters, I'll ask about them, and if their crawlers are as BIG as Michigan Sportsmans are, they'll get another steady Zip-Loc customer.

Big-P.
It's in Linwood, right hand side, 1/2 mile before the Bay, after the church and before the Linwood Bar/Hotel.

Between the "Gulps" and now my current favorite, the "Power Bait" purple (two-tone) curly tail 7" crawler for my harnesses, the real crawlers have been staying in the cooler and going back home to the fridge in the garage. Always have a couple dozen real with me for emergency sake, but these great plastics are doing the job ! :fish2:

Lucky Dog was right in spades.
Linwood party has 10 doz for $10.00 in the Zip-loc's and they are jumbo's. Also got a clue why these deals are floating around this year. Seems Canada had some real decent rains at the right times, and the nightcrawler market is buldging with excellent crawlers this year.

Word of advice about crawlers in these bags. They need to be aerated much more often than if you keep them in a box. I kept them that way for awhile and went back to the boxes mainly for that reason. I keep mine in ripped up newspaper in refrigerator works best for me. There is another reason why the price is 10 bucks but can't write it here. Skeeter

Skeeter is also correct.
It's best to poke many little holes at the top of the bags for aireation, unless cold water is going to be one the brief storage area on your boat.

If any one has purchased these worms from Dave, you know these worms aren't really worms, they are really snakes in disguise! So to combat the problem of these extra long creatures, we ended up running stinger hooks off the last snelled hook to see if are hook up rate increased and it really has over the past four trips. Most of the fish landed are on the stinger! We had just too many short hits because the crawlers were simply too long. So we decided to give it a shot and so far it's worked.
Just an idea...
