I fished an NBAA bass tournament on opening weekend out of great lakes marina and the turn out was lower that I expected. Was this just a bad weekend as far as other events or are there just not that many guys who tournament bass fish on the bay? I have another one this suday and was wondering if I should expect the same. By the way, I don't really mind having the best bass fishing in the state to myself:lol: .

Thanks, been reading the forums for a while. You walleye guys always have good reports on the water conditions.

there are bass fisherman, just not as many as there are walleye. i think most guys bass fish the bay casually. i know i do. if the bay is nasty i can stick to the shallows and catch bass if i want. i dont even do that as much as i used to though.....your right, one of the best bass fisheries in the state for smallies, or bucket mouths. good luck in your tournament.;)

Adam is right.

Saginaw Bay is the best Bass fishery everybody never heard about, few people care about, and even fewer people take advantage of. It's always been that way, even before the walleye comeback.

I heading up there this fall with the family and sure would love to catch me some smallmouth! I'll be staying in Tawas, any help would be appreciated. I'm wide open to all suggestions.

What kind of areas do you look for when fishing for smallies. I caught around spoils island last year and would like to find some other areas to catch em. I picked a few different kinds of goby bait to try this summer, can't wait to try em out just need time and gas money for the bass boat.. :irked:

Any canal will hold tons of 2.5lb largemouths in the spring. The smallies love rocky flats, they will be scattered throughout the summer but their are sweet spots on every spot. Deep rock piles are good in the summmer/fall, I've gotten them as deep as 35ft. With clear water it's easier to fish the deeper rock piles, you can just sit right on top of them. For smallies all you need are spinnerbaits/jerkbaits and tubes. I use the spinnerbait/jerkbait to find them and then the tubes to catch them. The fish are usually unpressured and a tube is enough. For the spring largemouths in canals, texas rig any soft plastic bait.
