Well, they surely can look like it at times. A few years back I shot a buck that had a big swelling on the side of his jaw and he looked like he had the mumps. Other than the ball of soybeans and acorns, he was okay. According to Lenny Lee Rue it can be quite common. Seems to me it is just a big glob of food that somehow gets caught. That doe looks like she may have some other type of growth though; perhaps a tumor of some type.

Looks like could be a tumor or could be lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes). I had a dog a few years ago that eventually had to be put down that had that and thats where he had some tumors.

Mumps??? Not in deer.
Probably some kind of infection draining and collecting into throat region or a tumor of some kind.

tumor is very posible. another reason that the growth could have gotten this large is parasites. often a wild animals body will quarintine and infection or parasite in attempt to keep the body as a whole healthy.
