I use my Lowrance LMS332c as just a Sonar on ice - and it has GPS which I use on the boat. 2400 watts of power and COLOR which - I'll NEVER fish in B&W again!
(The LMS334c can go anywhere with a built in GPS antenna)
It's that much better.
480X480 pixels and I also have a Humminbird 787c2 that's 4000 watts (dual beam) with 640X480 pixel color
The '332 goes for around $600-650 depending on WHERE you buy it and the 'Bird 787c2 retails for $700-650 depending on WHERE you buy it.
Lowrance has a wider screen and the resolution is still great.

Nice units - and a lot less than a grand!!
Both run swell in "full auto" as well.

I'm pretty happy with the Garmin unit I bought for my son's boat but I wouldn't over look Furuno when making the decision. Here's a few from Tight Line Rods, one of our site sponsors. His prices are quite good and carries all the major manufactures.

Even though I won the 'Bird from Cabela's Outfitter Journal - there's still $1350 retail value of electronics hangin' off this lil 16 footer.
:yikes:

The last flyer I got with my recent Cabelas order has a couple of lowrance units in the Bargain cave, for what seems to be a very fine price. They have the Lowrance LCX-20C with GPS for $699.99 down from $999.99. And the Lowrance X-15MT with GPS for $649.00 down from $1,099.00.
The 20c has a 6 inch color screen:

The X-15MT has a 7 inch black and white screen: (their web site doesn't list the one with the GPS, but my flyer does)

No eye sight is great. With both of the GPS and graph on one screen, I want to see whats there in a 7" screen. 5 " I think is too small for both.
BTW, everything is still working great (at my age  )

I just picked up the Garmin 498. It's a very very cool unit. Full gps with built in contours etc. Multi color and I do mean multi. I was going for the lowrance, but this thing took the cake!

ok im getting the bird [ i think :dizzy: ] whats a good mapping software for around here? You can click on the links and there are lists of the maps for the lakes that are loaded....
IF you want lake maps - the Navionics HotMaps Premium (north) is the "gold standard" and has scads of lake maps - I bought myself the HotMaps USA which has 3000 lakes around the USA.... Lots in Michigan (the bigger ones).
JollyAnn Marine has free shipping :
HM USA SD Card $129
Navionics Hotmaps USA (http://www.jollyannsales.com/navionics_hotmaps.htm)
MH Premium N SD Card $149
Navionics Hotmaps Premium (http://www.jollyannsales.com/navionics_hotmaps_premium.htm)
These DO NOT work with the older discontinued units LIKE the X15MT.
COMPATIBLE CHART PLOTTERS (http://www.navionics.com/Plotters.asp)
Good stuff............
If you want Land Topography --- I'm sure there's stuff out there.
