View Full Version : Trolling Motor Help
I can't get my trolling motor to work and am not sure what to do. Is it worth trying to find someone who might be able to fix it for me of just go buy a new one? It's an older Minn Kota, not sure the name for sure but I think it has 28 lb of thrust if that helps. Is there anyone in the Battle Creek/Kalamazoo area that might be able to fix it for me? If it's not worth trying to fix, where would I be able to get a decent bow mount with a foot pedal at a decent price? Any help that you might have would be GREATLY appreciated.

Give us a little more info. on what it is doing is the motor not working is the cables not turning, is the speed stuck? Let us know if its a bow mount or transom mount. We might be able to help you here!
The motor is just not working at all and I really don't have any idea how to work on trolling motors. The electrical cables up to it were chewed through by mice but I spliced them and used a test light to know that there is power up to the plug. It's bow mounted, variable speed, foot pedal, and I think it is kind of an older trolling motor. Again, any help that you guys might be able to give would be great.

take a look at the wires under the top cover of the trolling motor and test to see if power is getting that far. I've had mine ground out there. You can also run a power supply straight to where the power plugs into the top to test the motor, by passing the foot switch that could be bad.
Good luck!

Thanks, I'll give that a try! Everyone seems to think it could very well be the pedal, how often does the motor itself go out on these things?

they are pretty much bulletproof. the controls and the circuit board dies long before the motor unless it gets wet by a seal failing.look for rust or stains arround the motor . it a seal has leaked it will rust pretty quickly. the motor will turn pretty hard . i doubt that is the problem. use a set of jumper cables directly to the top 2 terminals after you disconnect the originals.its very easy to find after you remove the top.when the ratchewed thru the wires he may have shorted the board.there is a place in louisiana i called a couple years who specializes in trolling motor repair.they were pretty good over the phone.
