I'm trying to check the timing and advance on my '92 70 hp Yamaha. Should be simple and straight forward. I have tried two different timing lights and can not get the light to flash. I took the light I tried yesterday and hooked it to my tractor and it worked.
I know the motor is getting spark cause it was running when I tried, also hooked it up on the other two cylinders with no better outcome.
Can anyone 'help me see the light'??

It should be straight forward......Call Call Call.. do you have a repair manual for your motor.... I forked out the cash for one... and wow... it goes step by step... Boat motors are almost fix it yourself if you want it done right... so stick with it...

Yes I have the Yammie manual, so no problem with specs etc.
From what I now hear, this is a common issue (on Yammies at least). Some timing lights work ... some don't. And, this is not related to the expense of the light. I'm thinking it has to do with the inductive pick-up and the 'bleeding', or lack there-of, on the plug wires.
So, I guess I have to keep borrowing timing lights till I find one that will work.:dizzy: Anyone with a timing light come on over to Ed's this weekend ... FREE BEER to the first working light.

Are you using inductive lights? the ones where the clip goes around the wire? If you're not getting it to light I would get an older light that utilizes a "T" plug extension where the light attaches to the plug head and the plug wire goes to the other end of the "T" Some wiring won't bleed enough to light an inductive type.
