I'm looking to get a bait caster reel/rod. I am pretty sold on the Cabelas Prodigy reel with one of their rods in a combo, looks to be a great set up that wont bust the bank or atleast wont get the wife to PO'd.

Was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Prodigy or any input on it.

ALso what kinda of line is needed for a bait caster? I have Vanish florocarbon on my spinning rigs and like it, but would assume that there is something better or specific for casters.

I will be using rig for bass, but u know how u catch other species too while fishing! WIll be throwing both spinners and crank baits.

Thanks in advance,

J-

Great reel ! Have two of them, teamed with G Loomis CR722 6' med/fast rods. The reels are filled with 8 lb. Fireline and pull double duty - casting cranks/spinner baits for Smallies and verticle jigging for Walleyes. They are extremely smooth and cast well and the flipping switch lends itself well to verticle jigging. I highly recomend them - that comeing from an old Ambassaduer Man :yikes: ! Good luck - Bob

The prodigy casting reel is the best value for baitcasters out there, I love mine and my buddies do also.....for all around I use 20 # powerpro on casting reels and for northerns/bass/special applications I have either 20 and 30# fireline or 50# powerpro on my other casting reels.....as far as cabelas combos, they are hard to beat...

I am really starting to like the Powerpro line. I put some on one of my baitcasters, 30 lb and I really like it. Casts great, great sensitivity, and if you get snagged on something... just yank it off the bottom!

I picked up a Prodigy and Cabelas Fish Eagle rod today. For now it is just spooled with 15lb mono while I learn to remove birdnests:dizzy: LOL

Both the reel and the rod appear to be pretty high quality and I think with practice I'll be able to get pretty good.

Thanks for the info previously posted in this thread,
