Hello all , I recently purchased a Boat,Motor and Trailor for $2500. Was told the motor was a 92 fast strike 150 johnson. The boat had set up (not Cranked) for at least a year and a half.I'm green to outboard motors ,but knew to check basic lubricants before running. After installing new Gas Tanks,Battery ,and fuel/water separater it was test time.Cranked up like a new motor ,Brought it too the lake the next morning cranked up perfectly but shifter seemed really tight as if it was freezing up. went into reverse and forward ,but had to use some force. The boat came out the water pretty easy and got rite on top. I was really suprized at the speed and performance of the motor, as was my friend seated left of me.Upon approaching a no wake zone ,I applied slight pressure back on shifter and the motor dumped out . This happened so fast my friend was thrown from his seat onto the deck. The motor sputtered and jerked ,then smoothed to an idle .I quickly shifted to neutral then eased shifter forward with no problems except tightness. It did the same thing each time i attempted to slow down .Loaded it up came home and opened the shifter up. the greese was a gray color and texture was like old chewing gum on a school desk.Thought this was the problem so i cleaned all shifter parts with gasoline and regreased. Also replaced throttle cable and adjusted . went back to the lake shifter was smooth, run 3/4 throttle eased off nothing happened. was sure after 2 more trips to lake that i had fixed the problem. Then it did it again, same as before running good opened up ,having fun touched the shifter back slightly Dummmmmp everybody on the deck.:dizzy: People are telling me numerous ideas from timing, high/low settings, carbs need cleaning i just don't know. I do know my boats not very popular with friends and family ,please help and thanks in advance Charles

this is for an i/o ,but some of the diagnosis is the same.in your shifter is an interrupt swirch. it is a small micro roller
switch that stalls the motor momentatily when you shift.that will cause a poor idle. yours sounds more like this.call dave at performance marine to verify.2488823736.

Shift hard coming out of gear symptom of electrical problem.
1. With the engine running push down on the v-block to actuate the
micro-switch. Does the engine misfire when doing so?
2. If so unplug the micro switches and test w/ ohmeter
3. If no misfire unplug the large connector. Colors are blue and black.
On the side with the male pins, use a large flat blade screwdriver to short black to blue. Does the engine missfire? if not you have a E.S.A. module problem. (electronic shift assist). If it does misfire you have interupt switch ,overstroke switch problem. You can get a kit with both switches around 75 bucks. If you need the module there is a kit around
100-120 bills

Look at the plunger in the switch body sometimes they wear or break off
and appear good.

Burned or corroded ign points will also give this symptom as the complete system depends on a clean signal from coil primary.

Always disconnect the tach first before diag on this system

The seloc explains the procedure to adj the shift and switch cams.
