Let the games begin!!! To start, this forum has been weak on posts!?

Unbelievable hatch of brown drakes last night, actually way to thick with a blanket onthe water. Landed a 17-18" chunk, and then proceeded to hook and miss three others that were 17 and bigger. Feeding lasted for 45-50 minutes and then stopped with still a blanket of drakes floating. One small spot was so thick of drakes over/on the water that I could not whip without my line getting all screwed up and had to move down 20 yards!! There has been decent hatches of drakes below Chase up till last night which was the peak I'm sure BUT should be good all weekend as the hatch perhaps moves down the river!?!? Good luck.

When do the Hex start hatching? Planning a trip up the first weekend of july.

That question could generate a lot of answers. It will depoend a bit on where you are planning your trip and the weather between now and then. I plan on seeing some hexes next week in the section of river that I fish if things stay warm. I know that the brown drakes showed earlier for me than they did last year and hope the hexes do the same. I focus on one section of river and try not to chase the hexes thoughout the system. Where do you plan on fishing when you come up?

From my experience they start during June 10-17th depending on weather and what river you are on. I would look for good hot muggy weather during this time frame pack the box with a bunch of spinners and head up nort to a lower section of river. If the temp doesn't fall to low look for hex around 10:15 to start showing. Then open up a new beer and let the games begin.

My stretch this weekend after the big night went sour-a few but weak! But there were stretches below Chase that saw a fantastic brown drake hatch, even during the cool spell and rain especially Saturday night. Hex will be soon and not one person can tell you when and exactly where-rough guess at best.

Fished from Mio to McKinley on a 2 day float. Tossed streamers and landed a few 6-10". Too sunny for fishing, but beautiful for floating. Brown Drakes started popping around 8-8:30 with a few risers on Sat. Must have filled up on Fri.

Unfortunately the bugs never really came down there Friday. They started but then the rain hit and it was done.

Well I would be fishing mid June and start to try to find the hex hatch but my wife opted to go to Florida in this ungodly hot month. I don't respond well to hot weather. I prefer the Ausauble... But the weekend we get back I am planning on heading up and trying our luck.

Hunter, you may want to head 10-15 miles upstream past the 4001 and fish the stretch from there anywhere up to Mio, IMO much better trout waters then downstream from Alcona Dam. I have fished that strecth a couple times, and have hammered the smallmouth, but did not do to well on trout. Good luck.

I have heard and experienced myself that hex activity below mio is sparse at best.... just not good conditions or enough silt i guess. upstream is much better imo.... way up.

I agree 100% in regards to hex activity, my response was to his idea to catching trout while camping at Alcona Dam, not regarding the hex hatch and I was offering up friendly advice of where to get into some trout w/in 20 minutes of where he is camping. He is much better off going up stream from Alcona then down to get into any decent trout popoulation IMO. The stretch below Mio to 4001 has very little hex activity, it does have good drake hatches though and I can assure you there are a ton of fish in that strecth. If he wants to drive 45 minutes to an hour, good hex waters are available.

Its been awhile since I've been up there on River, but above Alcona you can float down from McKinley right to the lake and your campsite. Its a nice stretch and can even use a small boat. Find some grasshoppers and float those below a splitshot or 2 and you'll do well. Should try to go during week if possible, this is a big canoe area, and we used to innertube it from Mckinley to 4001 (great fun for that).
