I have a good buddy coming all the way from Iron Mountain to Fish with me for the Musky opener this weekend. That is all he talks about is coming down here and catching musky in the best musky lake in the country. No problem right? Wrong! I am a die hard walleye fisherman, but have never even wetted a line for a musky. He is bringing every musky bait imaginable and I have a lot of cranks. I guess my question to someone is can you throw me a bone on the best cranks to use, how fast you go(3.0-3.5), and location. Also can I get away with using my walleye trolling rods?? What kind of line do you guys use or do you use steel leaders? As you can see I have a thousand questions. I just want to hook him up with a couple of fish. Thanks in advance.

This site will cover your questions on trolling: http://www.muskie-lures.com/rocketman/index4.htm. The answer is definitely "no" for using your walleye rods. You might be better off casting for them since you're not set up for trolling and you've only got a couple of days to prepare.

No walleye rods for muskey. Salmon rods work though. Used those my first few years and still run a few off the sides at times.

We'll be heading out of Harley Ensign in the morning Saturday. Alot of us will be on 68 power raking the bays.

that rocketman site is a great site. make sure you search it really good. some of the areas are not easy to find, but there is a ton of info. i used to muskie troll quite a bit years back and very successfully, then moved to texas and fished offshore and forgot everything. came back to LSC last year and trolled for 2 months with nothing. kicked up our speeds quite a bit and bingo, back to 2 or more fish each outing. minimum speed, i feel is 4.5 but last year we were most succeessful at 5-6, some say even faster. if you dont have bullet proof rod holders, dont even attempt to troll unless you have a deep wallet. most rod holders won't even stand up to the trolling speeds yet alone a good hit. same thing with the planer boards, walleye boards will drown. if you dont have anything heavier then only run one or two with only one lure per rod. and remember that canadian rules are very different than ours as far as number of lines, lures and hooks per lure. KEY thing also is make sure every lure is running true, it makes a huge difference. i don't use this site much, so i don't know if you can see my email, if not chuckz32@comcast.net, pm me and i will be glad to talk to you on phone. i set up the double lures like rocket man but at different lengths. hope this helps, good luck, we will be out there all day. still haven't decided where we will start though.

no steel leaders, 30 to 50 pound mono for your line, and 50 pound leaders, you can spend alot on the leaders, i have used the cheap and the expensive, either of the extremes you need to constantly check them after each fish. i have never lost one yet to a leader breaking yet. last year we didn't boat a ton of fish, but years past we would catch 100 to 200 per year. now that we think we know what we are doing again, saturday will not come soon enough
