I have a 25 Evinrude. For the last week it will start once with the electric start and then after that I have to put a screwdriver on the motor mount while I hit the electric start, starts just fine when doing this but a real pain in the butt. Any ideas what the problem is? Can I run another ground wire to the mount or is this a bad idea? Any help would be great.

Groung wire. Might be under the flywheel, might be easier to just drill two places and put one on instead of removing the flywheel. Drill and tap, wire with two ends and two screws.

my 40 ph has a ground wire under the motor on the water side of the mount, outside the boat is what i am trying to say..raise the engine and look there on the mount ..look to see if the wire is broken or loose

I was thinking about running a really small wire from the original ground connection (it looks to be OK not loose or broken) to another bolt on the mount

Sometimes corrosion happens where you can't see, like inside the crimp. I've seen that many times on battery connections as well. It really likes to happen on boats because of galvanic corrosion and water, where disimilar metals touch each other.

just remove the old one and put on a new one that you solder..make sure you solder it..not just a crimp....good luck..and clean the motor mount good with sand paper to insure a good connection

I keep a tube or two of conductive grease around for these situations. Once you clean the contact area, put a dab of grease on before attaching the wire. You can probably find it at Murrays.

Make sure that you use a wire large enough to handle the current when starting the engine. You run the possibility of starting a fire with a wire that's too small.

yes by all means use a large wire at least the size wire that the orginal one and the crimp is when you put ends on the wire, like eyelets for screws to hold the wire to the mount..good luck

I truely believe that a 18 gage wire would be more than enough. I can't see how there would be enough current from the magneto to start a fire.

but i would use what the manufacture used to start with..OEM parts?? well at least the right size..

The size of the wire in the magneto and inside the spark plug wire are very small. It's high voltage with low current, to be able to jump the gap.
