So were getting the boat hooked up to go out on Lake Michigan Saturday, I had the charger on my battery in the boat. I hook the trailer up with the truck still running and plug in my trailer harness. Go to hop up in the boat and my wife says "SOMETHING IS BURNING" I kinda freak out and think that it is the battery. Nope, the trailer near the tongue is smoking and I figure out that it is my wiring on the trailer. I grab the plug on the harness and it is hotter than hell. By then the smoke is moving up the trailer. Plastic buring. It appears that the ground wire is buring all the way up to the point where it is screwed into the trailer. What went wrong? Why just the ground wire? Why would this happen? Any suggestion and or remedies? I do not know if it was caused by the truck or by the trailer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

first i would test the truck just get a wire tester the kind with a light on it .to make sure truck ok just hook up to a ground. green wire is right turn yellow is left turn .brown is running and white is ground.check that than go from their .you could also check trailer with battery charger same colors as truck . the only reason i can think of if your ground melted is it had to have power to it some how if that happend fuse should have went. hope that helps good luck

Check for exposed wire rubbing on the frame of the trailer.
