I need a bit of help. I bought a 1980 19' Starcraft, glass, 140 hp I/O with an Alpha 1 outdrive. Great boat. One thing though, the trim indicator on the dash doesn't work at all. The wires are hooked up, just no dial movement when actuating the tilt/trim. Any suggestions where to start looking ?

Then sensors on those drives are notorious for having issues. A sensor kit runs around 80 dollars and is normally available at most service dealers. It is a part they tend to keep on hand as they will have a couple sold each year.

Trim and Limit switches on either side of the Alpha 1.
My gauge goes from one extreme to the other, I would check it out at the gauge too though, or if your real handy check it out right at the switches themselves.
From what I hear, its not the 80 buck switches its routing the wiring thats the bugger. I read somewhere that you even have to pull the drive to do it, like a clamp or something that holds the harness down as the pass through the transom.
My other wonder, why not just put the new switches to the old wiring?

If trim and tilt work you may be better off just running them where the boat needs to be set. You may open a can of worms you may have to pull the outdrive I would wait untill the fall when you have all winter to play with them

If you splice the switches in they will not work, you cannot cut and splice the wires as it affects the way the system works. It is a rather labor intensive job to replace them, I would recommend planning for a full days work to do it.

Appreciate the responses. Sounds like it may involve more than what I had hoped for. Will do a bit of checking at the outdrive, and take a meter to the switch connections to see if the power is coming in there too, will definitely wait for the fall if it looks intensive. Thanks. :)
