The salmon are returning to lower lake Huron. My buddy and I put a hurt'n on them Thursday and Friday in Port Huron off the wall. We landed 4 kings and lost 2 more. All were in the 8-12lb range. All the fish were fat and healthy. I diced them up last night and found 3inch alwives in thier stomaches.

Thanks for the report! This is really nice to see. I'd take 8-12#ers any day of the week!

I did not know you could catch kings this time of year off of a wall??

How fast do you reel about 3 mph.

I knew of trout (steelies, lakers, browns) but only of salmon in the fall.

I knew of trout (steelies, lakers, browns) but only of salmon in the fall.Kings are in the river all year. In the past I've done well on them from late Feb. Till mid June. Athough they can be caught durring the summer its kinda rare. They usualy dont start showing up again until mid August.

I have seen no salmon caught off the wall nor have i caught any honest as of lately not unless they are olive green color with white bellys and weigh between 1-3lbs:evil: I wishes that I could catch another samon or 2 this spring from that wall.I have seen them jumping and boat fisherman catching them though. They are staying well offshore.

Like I said we hooked 6. But we werent the only ones catching them Everyone was. I saw atleast 8 other salmon/steelhead hooked by other fishermen. One guy had a nice steelhead about 8lbs. After last year I was shocked to see so many fish in one day. I didnt catch one salmon last year off the wall. I had pics of the fish but I accedently deleted them. They were silver and very healthy looked like a football. Hot lures were firetiger redeye, and blue dolphin MI stinger. I started fishing this year right after the ice flows stopped it was the first decent day I had. Although I didnt make it up there much in May. I was shocked there werent more walleye we only caught 7 and they were small 13inchers. Usualy this time of year the walleye are stacked in there.

They seem to catch more in that area compared to other sections of the wall.

hmmm. interesting. I didn't know the salmon ran this time of year in that river. I haven't heard anything about those salmon being caught. Usually its the first thing everyone finds out about down there.

Usually its the first thing everyone finds out about down there. The pics are from this past mamorial weekend. I fished the wall a couple of weeks ago no salmon but lots of walleye. We caught a 3 man limit in about 5 hours. From my past experiance fishing the river as of late May and June the salmon are realy hit and miss. Some years I've caught them some I havent. In 2003 I caught one mid July in the middle of the night.

I don't know why everybody's so skeptical about pier salmon this time of year, or earlier. If the bait comes in, they come in, it's quite simple. I hooked three kings off the north wall in Manistee on May 23rd, so I take it I'm lieing too, right.

Ausable and others are right. The salmon don't run the rivers per se...they follow the baitfish; whether they are in 10 or 110 feet of water, they will be right underneath them. It could be 90 degrees outside in mid july, but the right water temps is always key.

The right kind of wind turns the lake over, and the cool temps are near shore ... in the comfort zone of both predators and prey. Last july we had some proper winds at a certain harbor for a few days and then were watching kings cruise right alongside the pier and slam our live alewives under a bobber set 3 feet down in about 10 feet of water! There was nobody in the water on the beaches cause the temp was 52.

Aint that sweet? I went to Frankfurt pier last August (early august) and temps were in the high 40's. Millions of alewives were around the pier. The coolest thing I saw were salmon coming out of the weeds to hit the big school of wives in about 5 fow. I could actually see blood from the torn up alewives as a pack of kings slashed through the middle of them. It was incredible. My buddy and I actually didnt even hook that many kings prolly because of the overabundance of bait. It was still one of the most memmorable pier trips Ive had.

Ah, I can remember way back, like yesterday, where I hooked two kings (landed one) off the pier in nearly 100 degree air temp... watch the winds...
