Well quite a while back there was discussion about the alewives in lake huron making a come back.I had said that there has been a small population of them that show up in the st clair river during smelt dipping season and I would let everybody know if and when this happenes this year so we have an idea of if there still any around after this years winter.Well they have showed up this year as I thought they would. While the smlet have been sporadic, few and far between the alewives have been appearing off and on for about 2 weeks now. They are 5-6 inches in size give or take an inch.I have a much larger population of them showing up this year than in the last 4 years. There has also been one of the largest runs of shiners ever than what anybody can remember this year.I have not seen many juvinile yoy class of them though this spring. For those wanting to see the alewives make a come back this is good news.Sorry that I was unable to take any photos.

I can second that. I have seen the schools of shiners and alewives. The alewives I seen were in groups of maybe 20 or 30 and are as big as 8 inches. Last week I caught a 21 inch walleye in that river that had a 7 inch alewife in it. There are salmon in that river also. Steelhead too. I heard reports of the guys walleye jigging at Deckers catching 8 pound kings, and guys in St. Clair drifting with crawler harnesses for walleye are catching some big steelhead. The river is just FULL of bait. The alewives are BACK. All we need is RAIN! and a mild winter again.
