i was up there this past saturday for a half day... There were tons of boats out so something must be biting, unless they are all assuming that.

I didnt catch a thing or even have a bite....

I have in the past though!! Good Luck!

Hope to give it a try after Memorial day. I will have my 14 fiberglass boat, that I'm selling, with a "for sell sign" on it, fishing. Will try for bass & walleye.

Might have to give them bluegill a try also. I wouldn't mind some of them big Houghton Lake bluegills. Thanks for the heads up.

Great! GVSU is cleaning up on the Gills. Boy are they good eating. We'll be there on Thursday. What are the Gills biting?

Ended up cleaning about 60 8"-11" gills, We caught another 20 or so yesterday, but we already had pleanty for the freezer so we let them go. We caught 6 walleye in the 12"-14" range which looks good for the future of walleye in the lake. I also caught two keeper eyes 16" and 21". Caught and released some nice looking smallies as well. All in all it was a great weekend for fishing. We were using tear drops and small single hook spinners with leaches. Find the weeds in 10 feet of water and you will catch fish. Goodluck!

We were unable to make it up to HL until Saturday, didnt get a chance to fish til Monday. Man was it hot! Just drifted crawler harness'. My daughter (8) caught her first walleye! Matter of fact I think she hauled every 14 1/2 inch walleye outa HL! I lost count after about 10 or 12. She said she thought it the same fish. We never did get any keepers and got just about as many hammer handle pike. No gills, but drifting crawlers I didnt think we'd get into. Looking at our already rapidly filling up activity calender I'm not sure when we'll be back? Hopefully before the ice gets safe! :yikes:

Fished Thursday through Saturday...boated 10 eyes and 20-25 nice sized panfish. The action was certainly not hot and heavy but the weather was changing every hour. We got pelted with hail, wind and waves. Then within one hour it was clear, calm and hot. Then it stormed again and the cycle repeated. During the middle of one of the days the wind switched 180 degrees in an instant and stayed that way. Really weird stuff.

Not meaning to highjack this thread but the tone of it so far tells me that most of you are very familiar with Houghton Lake. A buddy and I have been fishing it late July to late August the past several years and are looking to fish it earlier this year. At what point do the weeds generally take over, late June, mid July or when??

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Busterboy

Hey Buster,

I usually go up on the Holiday weekends with friends that have a cottage on the N-West shore, the report they gave me was they did not see very many weeds as of yet but we cast for the Eyes out there. During the 4th of July the weeds are usually pretty thick by then

Memorial weekend fish report from the boys were not to hefty, only a few Eyes, 2 L-Mouth, 3 Crappie 5 Pike, and some perch and gills

Pretty slow for the boys, I'll be up there on the 4th of July to see what kind of damage I can do to the fishing!!

Flipper, thanks. We usually fish the northern bay, drifting whichever way the wind takes us that day. Hammer handle pike is what we mostly have caught along with a 'small' smallmouth or two and some very small perch. Hopefully getting up there earlier this year will help out.
