Ludington harbor will be dredged this year, but probably not until August.

Tom O’Bryan, a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said this morning that the project was given the go-ahead after a survey revealed roughly four or five feet of shoaling both at the mouth of the pierheads and along the inside of the south pierhead.

O’Bryan said the Corps has budgeted about $325,000 to remove an estimated 80,000 cubic yards of material.

Ludington will also be the focus of some work in 2007, U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra’s office announced this morning. About $177,000 was budgeted for condition surveys and safety improvements to the harbor and its structures as part of a House bill funding energy and water projects throughout the U.S.

Manistee received $47,000, which will cover a condition survey and not much else, O’Bryan said.

Two harbors that will be dredged in 2007 include Pentwater, which was budgeted for $150,000 and Arcadia, which was budgeted for $120,000.

Although Holland’s inner harbor was dredged last year and Grand Haven’s inner harbor is scheduled to be dredged starting in July both harbors received significant funding for 2007. Grand Haven was budgeted $438,000 and Holland was budgeted $549,000. O’Bryan said the money would go to outer harbor dredging.

Muskegon is also scheduled for outer harbor dredging and was budgeted $214,000 for the task.
