White or silver, these bass are running
The white bass is a Great Lakes native that averages about 12 inches and one pound. It will smack minnows or jigs with rubber or marabou tails. A fish at least two pounds will earn a state master angler award, and the state record is six pounds, seven ounces.
Closely related white perch, an exotic invader from the Atlantic Ocean, average six inches in length.
Biologists have found that in the Great Lakes, white bass and white perch are creating hybrids, and anglers in the Detroit area might be seeing the results.
