View Full Version : Disposal of Old Gas?
I try to use fresh gas/oil mix in my 15 hp each spring so now have accumulated 5 gallons of old stuff over the years from the boat motor, chain saw, snow blower and all the other 2 cycle motors I seem to have accumulated. Any suggestions on what to do with it?
Volumes of this stuff will be much lower in the future as now I am using one Stihl oil mix in everything but the boat. P@$$ on directions for 20, 32, 40, or 50 to 1.:dizzy:

You burn gas/oil mix in your truck? Why not run it in the lawn mower?

Hell yeah.. I use new gas for the semi weekly burning of whatever I can find to burn, that old gas wouldnt make it 5 minutes at my house.... Fire.....Fire....
BTW: You can take a 2 - liter and fill it with gas, and set it stable on a wood platform in a fire, the plastic will not melt, but it will kind of boil and "erupt" than wait, and do it again, until most of the gas is out of the two liter....
I mean, that would be dangerous, and I would never do that...

If the gas is just leftover fuel from the previous year then it has lost some of the octane but not a lot. Some guys just add fresh mix to the tank and run it. Some guys will just pour it into a larger fuel tank like on their car or truck and use it that way.
But, the big thing is that "FIP" says that the gas has been accumulated over the years so the stuff from 2 or more years ago has lost a lot of the octane rating and most likely has been turning into varnish. This contaminated the entire batch and it now is now pretty much worthless.
I aint making any recommendations as to how to use it, such as for starting fires;) .

I wasnt implying you should do it on your engine cover...
Hummmm.... I thought Michigan had banned you guys from having open fires, or is that just Ottawa County? Here in IN we seem to be able to burn anything, as my pyromaniac neighbor attests to every day by burning his household garbage. Always seems to do it when the wind is coming my way. Really torques me off when I know the grandkid's dirty diapers are in the barrel.
Jason may have 'sparked' an idea - a 2 liter bottle of my old gas stuffed down in his burning barrel could be fun to watch.:evilsmile

Call the local fire dept. I think they use it for training. May take paint and other fuels also. SG:fish:
