I don't even have a boat and I am very curious to see how everyone made out. It should be a decent indicator as to how the situation really is on the Sunrise Side.

Rawhide won this years event. I know he had 12 fish on Sat and 9 today. I did not go to the weigh in today but I think he had like 60lbs on Sat. Hats off to anyone that caught a fish today in that mess. Solid 6-8 foot waves when we pulled at 9:00. The wind and waves were so bad it was almost impossible to get our riggers in the water.

Hats off to Rawhide for putting 2 days together.
Fishing was tough, 4 days of north wind and the low that sat over georgian bay had the lakers lockjawed. Pink Salmon are everywhere! Chinooks, steelhead, coho are spreadout everywhere and you can expect about 1 every trip out of late.
Kind of weird how the Sanilac and Lex tournaments both had heavy coolers last weekend and this weekend the fish are pretty tight lipped. The guys that can turn fish did but most struggled.

Wow, boats actually went out yesterday????
Congrats Jason.
I don't know what the big lake looked like, but the flag at my house was standing straight out for most of the day..

I cant imagine, what the lake looked like yesterday, I was in holland, and the wind was blowing pretty good. Temps in the 50's, but felt like 30's.
Does anyone have the top ten?
Mike what do u mean u were D'Q. Sorry to here about that.

Thanks guys. It was a real battle out there yesterday. When we turned Harbor Beach on the way to Port Hope the waves were 6 feet plus and stacked right on top of each other. By 10 AM they were 8-12 footers, northwest 25 knot winds with 35+ knot gusts. Sleet, rain, etc, bad stuff. My crew (which included site members Chasin, Idylmoments and Inthenet) did an amazing job of keeping our stuff in the water and untangled. For a while, it was all we could do to slow the boat down and keep it going in a half way steady direction. We had 9 mud chickens, a king, a steely and a pink on day one (also lost a nice king) for 65 lbs. 9 trout for 51 lbs on day two. King fishing was much better for us on Wednesday before the weather went to hell.
The good news is the kings are looking healthier than last year and the big king was 11lbs, 2 lbs better than last year. There have been 15 lbers caught on the Canadian side, where there seems to be a lot more smelt running. It seems last year was the bottom and Lake Huron is on the way back up.
Congrats to the other boats in the top ten for a job well done in nasty conditions. Maybe someone can fill in the blanks or correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the rest of the top ten was:
2. Gone Bad (very impressive 61 lbs Sunday)
3. Steve Cutler and crew (can't remember the boat name...)
4. Circus Act
5. Flippin Silver (only boat in top ten not out of Port Sanilac, fished Port Huron)
6. Ivanhoe
7. One in the Box
8. Bandit
9.
10. (Lake Ontario tourney team, not sure of boat name)

Congrats Rawhide!
We fished out of Sanilac this weekend but were not in the tourney. We got out for an hour or two yesterday morning and got a double header on greasers and called it a little while after that. It was already pretty nasty and building!

Mike what do u mean u were D'Q. Sorry to here about that.
We were late for the weigh-in at port huron. No biggie, as we only had 2 small trout. Rules are the rules, and I had no problem with the decision. We left Sanilac kind of late (4:10) and could not get to the weigh-in line by 5pm. There were 2 construction zones, and the bridge at the black river went up right in front of us. I was less than 40 ft with cooler in hand when they called the time. We were late, end of story. We made up for it Sunday though lucking out with the biggest fish of the tournament.

We couldnt participate in the BWC due to engine troubles Friday afternoon... we had the Port Sanilac :help:tow boat come get us in those 6-7 footers friday up by the Beach.
Congrates to the top finishers...and the ones that toughed out the weather. We tested our rigg Sunday and lost track of all the boats that kept coming in to the harbor early.

P.S. If you dont have insurance for towing. I suggest you look into it. It's one of those things your glad you spent the few bucks for.

Congratulations to all the teams that fished. We did what we could and I thought we did fairly decent for what we went through. We can't hang with the big boys but we hung out near the harbor (withing 4 or 5 miles) for one heck of a rollercoaster ride. 4 for 5 or 6 Saturday and we did 6 for 12 yesterday. Looking forward to next year!
Thanks Again Wishtofish and Goosebuster79 for a great time and an enclosure from the waves.

Yep:
We are a medium sized boat (27' Sportcraft). Team WishtoFish weighed in 4 lakers at 18+ pounds on Saturday. I thought that it was respectful for our 1st time fishing in the Blue Water. We worked both sides of the Port Sanilac Harbor, starting north & finishing south.
It was a wild ride on Sunday. Started north of the Harbor a few miles and picked up our 1st laker of the day. Seas were building as the wind was turn into a gale. Boats were on the radio announcing that they were returning in to the harbor. We decided to pull everything up. We were going to call it a day.... but worked our way in south of the harbor inside some of our marks from Friday & Saturday. We found some protection from the harbor to our backside & dropped the lines. We had 3 rips & boated 2 lakers on our 1st pass. We decided to pickup & go back north, we dropped back in over the same area & got a doubleheader..... one on the leadcore 7 colors & a lot of backing out....... Two of my crew were fighting fish & we had every bit of a 10' swell behind the boat.... what a rush..... We boated those last 2 fish & called it a day. We weighed in 5 fish on Sunday at 28+ pounds.
Team WishtoFish finished with over 47 pounds for the BWC.... I would like to know the final standings, not just the Top 10.............
Thanks to a great crew of Michigan Sportsman members Goosebustr79, Makowish & Gonzo. GREAT JOB GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :fish:

Congratulations Rawhide. Very good showing in tough conditions. Anyone know how long it usually takes to post the results? This was our first year, so I'm curious how it stacked up. Though the weather was tough, the results are encouraging if this weekend is any indication of the rest of the season. We had a fair day Saturday going 5 for 7 (4 lakers and 1 coho). We stuck it out until about 10:00 on Sunday when the waves and some electronics trouble chased us off the water. We managed to hit 2 lakers and a nice 9 lb king around 9:00, just couldn't justify the risk of staying out. We ended up with 24 and 22 lbs for the 2 days.

We were joking about that at the way in. We felt bad for Tom. Now he has to change all his brouchers. If you guys are fishing next year maybe he should hold off. As of yet theres never been a three time winner.

Towing insurance is a great idea.
I don't have enough tiome to explain what we went through this weekend.
We only made it to our spot on Saturday and only got to fish for an hour before we had to head back to weigh in. We boated an 11 pound laker and a 3 pound coho and lost another laker right at the net. The fish were there and feeding we just could not get to them.
To say we had boat trouble in an understatement. The Lil' Tanker went down Friday morning during the prefish and hads to be towed in. We sheared a disrtibutor gear and bent a valve.
We pulled our stuff and rigged it on my father in laws (Miller's Time) other boat a 24 foot penn yen and made it to the captains dinner just in time to enter the tourney. We had a carburator pboblem with that boat on Sat. and did not get to our hole until 10:30. We then had to head back at noon to make it to weigh in because the boat would only go 10 MPH.
Sunday we broke down again and got stuck right under the BW bridge in the current. Had to cut my anchor and pay $200 to be towed in.
What a disapointing weekend. Would like to know what we are capable of if we could actually fish the whole tournament. This is 2 years in a row we have had trouble. Next year is our year. :cwm27: :cwm27: :cwm27:

Congrats on win. Lake Huron was true to form for a May fish. Great seeing you Thursday; I'm actually glad I left. I talked to Larry H yesterday and he was still beat up. I told him he should just let you young bucks go but I guess we still have the fire! You are probably going to that other Lake now but if you stop over give me call. Capt Ed

Congrats Fletch. Nice win for sure! And, credit to all that placed in the top ten as well to all that even fished in this years classic.
I have trolled in some big rollers b4, but never sideways b/c of the wind:dizzy: We could only keep 2 riggers going with the direction that the boat was being pushed. We ended up in about 130 FOW near White Rock and had a wave come over the side- that is when we called it. So we moved in closer to shore and tried to bump some grease in 40-60 FOW.
Again, congrats Fletch, Idyl, Chasin, InTheNet........

OK I'll ask! Why in the world was the tourney NOT cancelled on Sunday? Just reading the posts, seems a bit stupid, even the "scalefish tournaments"(ie walleye guys!) have some common sense when it comes to weather. What a total disadvantage to the smaller boats. Is this competition now only worth it if you have a 25-27 foot boat and bigger?!? Just playing devils advocate here. And I'll add: no fish is worth what some on here describe.

I hear you, but there were some unique things going on here.....
First off, the water was flat and the wind was calm at the shotgun start. The gales didn't arrive until about 6:20, or 0:20 after the shotgun star. In the BWC it is "captain's discretion" once the boats are released for fishing. IMO thats the way it should be because there is no way to ensure that all boats can be reached by radio in the event of a cancellation after the tourney starts. I'm sure some disagree (see: Ludington Gander Mountain 2005)
Secondly, if you wanted to fish 20-30 FOW near the harbor (like the 2nd place boat, Gone Bad, who weighed 61 lbs on Sunday), it was quite fishable/safe given that it was a northwest wind and land provided protection.
The tournament committee did the right thing in this case. If any accessable tourney water is safe to fish, then they have to let you go.

Jeff:
We fished up there a few weekends ago. I had a friend on WishtoFish with Don & I. It got a little rough that Saturday, but nothing like it was this past Sunday.
We ran in close (30-40' of water) south of the harbor for some protection from the wind.... We picked up 4 fish in tight & we should have pulled up and moved in earlier. All in all it was a good tournament for us. It was our 1st time fishing the Blue Water. I am looking forward to next year.....

What makes the Classic unique is the fact that the harbors you can fish out of are 45 miles apart. Very bad water at one port my not be the same at the next. and by having one of the ports being Port Huron there is always the ubility to fish the river. Several years ago when Harbor Beach was opened there was a big blow and I remember guys trolling inside the harbor and catching fish. I believe that was the same year that Fletch had his flybridge about ripped off the boat when he cleared the pier heads in Port Sanilac.:yikes:

A message from the BW Classic Chairman
The Classic this year was a great event. As a first time chairman I know there are bumps to work out and I am looking forward to year 2. A huge thank you needs to go to the top notch committee of the Classic this year. When you see Karen & Bob Roskey, Bob Lane, Preston Schroeder Jr, Mike Rymar, Mike Warshefski, Bill Lill, Paul Baker, & Rob Helzer tell them thanks for enhancing this club the way that they do. The Port Huron team was headed by Karen Roskey and what a spectacular job she did. Even when the tent fell Sunday in the Gale force winds, Karen never missed a beat and problem solved. She also ran the weigh-in with Jim Glumbowski and Rob Helzer and kept the tournament very professional. Bill Lil had to overcome many obstacles in Port Sanilac, and he & his team were terrific. Mike Warshefski ran Lexington and faced the untimely death of his father during the tournament. Mike came back and with John Coutillo and Frank Biessel and crew they ran that port with remarkable professionalism.
I was blessed this year with help of people I am proud to call friend and next year this tournament will be bigger & better because of the volunteers who will it to be that way.
Thanks to all for making this our best tournament. Have a great summer.
Debby
OTher article
The boat Ivanhoe has been a mainstay in this club for many years. With Jay Korneffel as the captain you can bet his team is top notch. There is one member of the Ivanhoe crew that rates a special mention. His name is Leo Williams. At 81 years young Leo drives the Ivanhoe team to fishing spots that help them place every year. Leo has been fishing since he was a young lad growing up in St. Clair Shores. Imagine, how much knowledge this man brings to a team. And, he has seen it all when it comes to the ups & downs of the fishery. I hope we all have the opportunity to be as active and strong at 81 as Leo Williams is. I wonder if he would give us some of his insights into the fishing or is that an Ivanhoe trade secret. Three cheers for Leo Williams our oldest angler in the Classic

Hats off to Mike Warshefski. Mike was the port captain of Lexington. We usually try to have a camp/base/trailer set up at the ports for the volenteers at the ports. Mike and his father were out during the week prior, cleaning up their trailer to bring to Lexington. Mike's father fell off a ladder had hit his head badly. Mike's father passed away over the weekend during the tournament. Mike still ran the port.
My heart goes out to Mike and his family.

I thought the Calcutta was supposed to pay every 4th place????????
"A Calcutta is an additional tournament and entry that will be run during the Classic. The cost is $100 CASH. 80% of the entry that is taken in will be paid back to the participants. Prizes are awarded for every 4th boat that enters. If 100 boats enter into the Calcutta, there will be 25 prizes. Those are pretty good odds at taking home a prize. The standings are determined by your total weight of your two-day catch. The same rules and tournament committee that govern the Blue Water Classic will be used for the Calcutta."
Looks to me like it payed:
1st
3rd
5th
6th
7th and
8th
What gives???

If 100 boats enter into the Calcutta, there will be 25 prizes. Approximately 25% of the boats that enter into the Calcutta will receive a prize. That's exactly the way I wrote it- what is different?
If there where 6 winners then 24 boats out of 75 (?) entered into the Calcutta Side bet. This means that it should pay out:
1st (Rawhide)/ 4th (Flippin Silver)/ 8th?/ 12th?/ 16th?/ 20th?/ and 24th? (not overall, but rather only placing the boats that entered into the Calcutta)
Please confirm...........

25 boats entered in the Calcutta. 6 prizes were awarded to the top 6 boats that entered into it.
A prize is award for every 4th boats that enters.
NOT a prize is awarded to every 4th boat.
It was run just like the Algo Lions used to run theirs. Should be nothing new to the BM2 team
