Fished the channel for about an hour 2 carp over 20 pounds and broke another one off.

It was well worth the 4 dollars in a hopkins spoon that i just lost;)

I've never ate carp but a lot of people around here have been trying sheepheads out of curiousity and have said they taste just as good as walleye... so who knows???

Probably snagged... happens a lot in the spring when they bunch up in the harbors.

We do snag some carp but most of them are hooked in the mouth.. Sheephead have been hit or miss....

One day a few years back we could not get on the big lake due to heavy winds & high waves. We ended up having a Sheephead contest with another desperate boat. We caught them equally well off of the riggers and dipseys.

Throwing all caution to the wind, we kept our catch and decided to see how they tasted. They are actually a commercial fish in the Mississippi Delta. . . Anyway, we cooked them a few different ways and even made Ceviche. I have to say they weren't bad, but would not go out of my way to fish them often. Here's some more info:

Status: The freshwater drum is the only widespread species of this family in the fresh waters of the United States. The freshwater drum has the distinction of having the greatest distribution in rivers, natural lakes, and reservoirs, where it feeds along the bottoms upon immature insects, crayfish, and minnows.

Nutritional values: The freshwater drum is low in sodium, cholesterol, and calories, and high in protein, vitamins, and minerals. The drum is a good source of vitamins A, D, B-complex, and the minerals iron, calcium, phosphorous, manganese, copper, cobalt, and zinc.

Features and benefits: Sheepshead, because of their diet, and with proper care, is an excellent eating fish; as good as, if not better than the walleye. The meat is moderately firm, mild, and sweet tasting. Meat color turns snow white when cooked. Sheephead may be used as a substitute for snapper, grouper, tilapia, pike, or halibut.

Product forms: Sheepshead can be headed-gutted(scaled or skinned),fillets(skin-on or skinless), minced or deboned.

My Strange 2 Cents,

Alex

I had a friend from the deep south that loved sheephead. I will admit i tried it and it is eatable, as are most fish. I am not a big fish fan, so most fish taste the same to me.
