For the sake of a newbee that's been trying to get out and try this river of ours for the past two years, to no avail, does anyone have a picture of how you rig your jigs with minnows? I searched and found a pic of the elusive "Wyandotte" worm all rigged up, stinger and all, but I've yet to see how you guys do it with a minnow. Does anyone have one to share?
Before I get beat up for not trying the river, especially with my freshly painted boat, I have to include the fact that the wife had some pretty extensive ankle surgery two Friday's ago. So I've been pretty much playing nurse, cook, etc.
All I can hope is that the bite holds for a few more weeks.

Don`t have any pics but last spring crappie fishing in Tn. we just ran the hook thru both jaws from the bottom up like a trailer rig on a spinner bait. Never tried it here in Mi. They stay pretty lively that way. Good luck!

I open the minnows mouth and put the point of the hook in the mouth and come out the bottom of the chin through that triangle piece of meat next to the gill. then I slide the minnows mouth up the hook untill the lips hit the ball of the jig head and the hole shank of the hook is sticking out the chin of the minnow. Spin the jig head 180 degres so the point is pointed back up Then I bend the minnow in a U shape and push the hook up through the belly out the top of top fin.

the one additional thing i do, after rigging my minnow like MrBluegill, is to put a small "slice" of plastic worm on the shank of the hook and push it tight to the minnow. this helps keep the minnow stationary and hard for it to come off of the hook. the size of the "slice" i use is an 1/8" thick piece of worm or grub that i cut out of the "head" section. i keep several colors of these slices in my walleye jig box to kinda match jig-head colors.

I take the minnow open it's mouth slide the hook into the mouth and out the gill opening, then turn minnow and hook lightly through the back, the minnow will end up sideways on the jig, I find this will not only keep the minnow onn but also alive for a while, providing you hook it high enough in the back. I don't know if this helps, I will try to take a picture.

Nice set up Hotwired! That is the best thing I've ever seen. What is the stinger tied to?

Cast,
It's tied to the jig hook.
I first size up the jig to the plastic to see where the big hook will exit the plastic.
The stinger is then tied with a loop on one end and a #4 or #6 baitholder hook on the other end, it's length should be from where the jig hook exits to as far back as where you want the stinger to exit.
Next I run another piece of mono through a large sewing needle and run it through the loop end and tie it.
I then enter the needle up the back end and exit where the jig hook will exit and leave the loop sticking out a bit.
I now thread the plastic onto the jig making sure the hook goes through the loop, I also like to put a dab of super glue on the jig collar.
Now pull the stinger hook back a little to hide the loop inside the plastic.

I grab the minnow by pinching it on the gills, then run the hook through the lower mouth directly under the spot between the eyes ( the fore head ) bring the hook all the way up through the forehead dead center. if you get it in the brain exactly the sonabitch can twitch like its swimming for an hour.

now the real secret is take a "stinger hook" that looks and works like this . (http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=61525&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults)
it goes on the jig hook and clamps shut, i like to use a plyers and just force it to stay there, then one of the hooks goes in the tail or body of the minnow near the back. this is the art. the minnow will shed its scales on you and slip out of your hand easy. ive lost alot of blood trying to burry the triple hook into the minnow, but hell, nothing is worse than a monster hit and pulling up minnow that was bit inhalf 2inches below your hook. when i use this rig i never use a plastic tail with a second hook as shown above because every eye i pull out is stuck on the trailing hook(s) Ps those little bastards get expensive as you may loose 10 a trip, especially starting out so dont be cheap, get many, you will be rewarded.

I spent a few hours experimenting with Hotwired's technique for tying on the stinger and his method is awsome. I have been able to catch 5 or 6 walleye on one before the rubber worm is so macerated I have to change to a new setup. Using his technique, if all goes well, I can tie one up in 15-20 minutes. I was not able to master his method of knotting the stinger line to the jig hook so instead I used a palomar knott. I am able to get the length right by tightening it using the free end of the stinger monofilament line rather than pulling on the line attached to the stinger hook.
I found it is really important to add that drop of super glue to the knott as a final step that he recommends, and make sure you do not super glue your fingers together - darn that hurts to pull them apart.:dizzy:

I agree...but...man, is that first one frustrating!!! I broke the first sewing needle eye, must have went through 2 ft. of line on the first snell (bought a snelling tool). Got rid of the snelling tool and tied 3 stingers in about 10 minutes. I am using a piece of fine wire to thread the stinger on the worm. Just hope the 'eyes don't get used to seeing this setup after I'm done rigging up a dozen or two :dizzy: ;)
