The tail and wings finally dried so I thought I'd give this mount a try today. The fan had a couple feathers that were clipped towards the ends so it's not the best looking fan. All in all, I'm pleased and am glad I tried it myself.
What do you think?

28 vies and no replies. Does it suck that bad? In the picture I see the symmetry isn't what a professional would produce. I did mine first so I could get some ideas of what to do/not do when I complete my son's.

It looks great, good job!!!, The gap makes it unique. Definately an active bird... I like it.

Thats the first time I have ever seen a mount with the wings, feet, and everything all on one piece of wood.. Definately a concept i will try again... I prop the feet so they stand up and just use the fan but never have added the wings... what did you use to pin those down to spread them out like that, I like that idea and would definately like to try it for next year should i be lucky enough to get one again...

I nailed the wings and fan onto a piece of particle board and doused them with Borax for about 2.5weeks.
I used some scrap steel I had lying around as the support for the wings. I'll take some pictures of my son's as I do it.

looks great, I dont mind the gap, but if you didnt like it you could just use tailfeathers from another turkey to fill it in.

If while still fresh one can pull the feather out of the meat. They can then be arranged on a piece of corrugated cardboard and hot glued to it. There is a fellow up here that does that for $35 and the hunter gets it back in 1-2 days. He has quite a few customers.
As far as the one in the pic-it could be repaired where deficient but is ok as is..

Good job! I guarentee you that those wings were a challenge for a first try by yourself.

Only suggestion is the same a master taxidermist friend of mine gave me:
Take some of the additional rump feathers and hot glue them to the base of the fan, covering all the down feathers until you get to the wood. A higher level of difficulty, but definitely worth the time in the way it looks!
