Planning a trip to the AuSable below Mio in early June. I was just wondering what 3-4 must have dry flies and streamers and sizes I should bring along.

Thanks,

BA

Best thing to do is look at the hatch charts for that section of the river. That time brown drakes will probably be hot and heavy. I would just check the hatch report and maybe give bob linesman (sp) fly shop a call and he should be about to give you a fishing report around that time.

everything seems to be running a bit ahead of time so far this year, so best bet is to call ahead, and as mentioned, Bob Linsenmans place is honest and accurate. historically, the time you are planning is a fantastic time on that water! enjoy :fish:

Brown Drakes, and yellow bellied Mattress thrashers (if you arent sure of this one let me know and I'll show you one)- You should also catch the tail end of the Sulphurs. More than likely you will be about 7-10 days early for Hex, but there always is a chance with the way hatches are early this year, so have a few in the box just in case.

Brown drakes, sulphurs, maybe even some iso's and big heavy streamers if you are going to streamer fish below Mio. As it's been mentioned everything seems to be early and Linseman's shop is pretty up to date and honest with their info (989) 826-8500 so call them before hand. It also would be a goo idea to have some BWO's on hand also.

Yeah make sure you have the BWO's and Caddis. It's hard to tell at this point on the other hatches but you know those two will always be there. Others were right on. I have a suspicion that the Iso's will be starting and the evening fishing should be starting to get reved up with later hatches.:D

Thanks for all the advice. I will give the fly shop a call and see what is hatching. Hopefully the water will be down by then.

It's a great imitation of the large stones that are on the Au Sable, easy to tie, and floats like a cork:coolgleam

Also make sure to clip the bottom of the hackle flat. Thats an easy to overlook step but very important to the way it rides on the water.

Thanks Steeldrifter! Do you use the color shown or a different combo?

I tie it pretty much as shown, with the only exception being that I use all black or brown dubbing for the body. The recipe calls for a mix of seal fur in the body, but thats not exactly something that is easy to come by in most places:bloos: so I sub a dark dubbing for it.

Looks like an easy variation would be to put a set of rubber legs on that beast - I'm probably not the first to think of that one though.

We tied up some matress thrashers for our trip this past weekend. We had heard that the fish were responding well to them. Sure enough. It makes a great pattern for a dropper rig when the hatch isn't on. As someone mentioned it does float like a cork.
