I was just reading everyones favorite way to cook their turkey's, and I saw that everyone just breasted them out. I was wondering if you breast them out and then throw the rest away or if you do something with the rest also. Im just wondering because I have one in the freezer and I was under the impression that I just throw the entire bird in the oven for 3 hours and then carve it up.

Whats the call?

We've cooked the whole bird before and there's a couple problems with that.

1. It takes HOURS to cook.....I'm hungry NOW!

2. We like to grill the turkey so it can be a little tall, bulky, and clumsy on the grill.

3. Those legs do a lot of running in the wild (unlike tame turkeys) and sometimes you'll just about rip your teeth out trying to eat them. :yikes:

That's why I breast them out.

I pick my birds and roast them in a roasting bag. Leave the breast sponge on the neck on the bird as it gives moisture to the meat. Ya need the skin on to keep the meat from drying out in the oven.

It only takes a hour and a half to two hours to roast one. I usually do mine the day before I want to eat it. I carver it and bone it out and put it in tupperware. I then pour a little of the juice from the bag over the meat to add moisture.

I never have had a complaint since I started doing it that way. True the legs make pretty good billy clubs but the rest is great. I never season it at all as I love the taste of wild game as mother nature made it.

I am happy to say that "everyone" doesnt just take the breast and leave the rest of the bird to rot.

Can you say "turkey fryer"??

IMHO this is absolutely the tastiest and best way to handle Tommy Threetoes for dinner. It makes for the juciest and tastiest and tenderest wild turkey you'll ever eat. We usually save ours for one of the summer holidays when family and friends are up. There are a variety of marianades (sp) you can inject into the breast and thighs according to taste.

What do you do with the deer you kill, just rip out the backstraps and leave the rest of the carcass to rot in the field??

I roast them whole, enjoy the breasts out of the oven. I take the legs and thighs, debone them and grind them up in a food processor and add mayo, onions, celery and lettuce for a turkey salad sandwich spread. I guess I should add this to the other post. It is a great way to use the leg and thighs.

I did mine half and half. Breasted out one side for dinner one night, left the other half of the bird in tact for the next night.

I poured Italian dressing over the in-tact portion of the bird, laid bacon strips over it and let it stand overnight.

Cooked it up like Thanksgiving dinner the next night.

I pluck all my birds and do them in the bag. They are great that way!!

3 1/2 minutes per pound with 350 degree peanut oil WHOLE...serious wanton waste breasting a turkey.
