I was wondering if anyone has any experience with self guided Canadian trips. I have set a preliminary destination of the Manicouagan Reservoir which lies ~400 miles due north of the northern tip of Maine in Northern Quebec(the lake is in the shape of a circle nearly 70 km wide, a picture can be quickly found by searching yahoo pics by name). I plan to go up for the last ten days of June. I have researched their regulations and I found them quite reasonable, yet complicated. I would like to see some sights, maybe some hiking, canoeing (how do they deal with the transport of firearms (if at all) canoes and boats (registration) at the boarder), lots of fishing (mostly brookies but really anything I can find).I figure many of you have put together similar trips to several of the Canadian Provinces and would have some useful input. Any tips, pointers, recommendations and recommended destinations would all be greatly appreciated. I also posted this in the cold water species forum but have had no replies, I thought that maybe the subject matter was too far removed from their forum. So I posted it here.

Thanks in advance for any help

I am thinking of a trip to a lake north of Kingston, ON. I was going to take my own boat and either camp in a tent or stay in a cabin on the lake. Talked to a guy who has done this before and he said it's really no sweat. Just have your boat legally registered and insured in your home state, and bring the documentation to prove it. Don't forget photo id to cross the border in both directions.

Beyond these things, it would be just like a normal fishing/camping trip as far as gear and preparation. Might want to phone ahead to a nearby lodge or tackle shop for local tackle/tactic recommendations.

You will enjoy the trip.
I fish in Ontario and we camp in the bush or on islands in lakes we fish.
Going to go to a lake 100 miles north of the village of Pickle Lake. Pickle Lake is the farthest you can drive in Ontario on a paved road then 100 miles on gravel then 20 miles up the Pipestone River.
This trip is 1068 miles one way but the fishing is very worthwhile and the scenery and seclusion is soooooo great.
The Canadians are very good hosts and we have made lifelong friends with some of them.
We are mostly catch and release we don't bring fish home but do eat fish while camping there.
