Anybody brush up against the big fire east of Grayling yesterday? I was floating the S. Branch and smelled smoke almost constantly from 2:30 on. Later, bits of ash were falling as steadily as snowflakes. I didn't figure what was going on until I got to the landing at McMasters' and a guy told me about the fire. Once I drove up out of the river bottom, I could see massive clouds of smoke rising to the southeast. Smoke hung heavy in the woods for most of the drive back to grayling, and cops had F-97 blocked off south of M-72. Pretty freaky. I've never been that close to a forest fire before.

Fishing? 1 13" brown to show for my troubles. It must have been the falling ashes that put them down. That had to be it.

As of 6p.m. today 6000 acres are repoted to have burned up here with 95% of the fire contained. We really need some rain to lower the fire danger.
