The kings are starting to go good at St Joe. 3 of us fished today and we landed 10 kings, threw one back and got one coho. We hit and lost a lot too. Our fish came on full cores, half cores, riggers from 40ft to as deep as 80 ft and a 1-1/2 lb drop out 120ft with a white and green seaweed meat rig. Free sliders on the riggers worked. Blue dolphin, monkey shine and a steve's bait were the best spoons, all took at least a couple. A double jointed orange and gold rap took a couple high lined behind a bird. We fished from 80 to 125 ft of water, deeper was better later in the morning. Good luck!

Yes, all the work was inside the railroad bridge today.

EdB - Where in relation to the SJ pierheads did you catch your fish?
North?
South?
Straightout?

Doubleplay, welcome to the site! why don't you fill out your profile, I'd send you a PM with the numbers. We started about straight out and worked north from there about 5 miles.

Thanks EdB. Took me minute to figure out how to do it, but I think I got it.

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take to eat those ten kings??? With the consumption adviseries and all, thats like a whole summers worth of fish.

Able bodied males can eat unlimited amounts of kings (any size) from Lake MI according to the fish consumption advisory from 2004. Did they publish a new advisory with restirctions on kings? However with Browns and Lakers.... you'd be better off drinking the contents of a thermometer.

Awesome Ed, that had to be a riot! 9 kings split between 3 friends and families does not go very far. As long as he is within his limit I fail to see the issue wacko.

Hehehehe, whacko, if 3 kings a person is your whole seasons worth, you need to learn how to fish! Me thinks you must be having a bad day.

Good job ED, gotta love them spring kings, nothin better on a rod for April or May.

Oh, sorry guys, I forgot that I'm on the "coldwater - whack em, and stack em - boat angler board ", I've just been wondering why people keep so many fish and thought I would ask. I'm just curious how long it takes to eat that many fish. I mean do they sit in the freezer for months, and then every weekend you stack more dead fish in there with them or do they actually get eaten before you head out and catch another cooler full?

Most of us that fish the Great Lakes do not eat a tenth of the fish we catch....we give them away. We all treasure the fish we have the opportunity to battle on the Great Lakes and all the fisherman I know do their best to waste as little as possible. Most people never get the opportunity to have truely fresh salmon or steelhead or brown trout or coho and consider it a special treat.

I know that everytime my neighbors see me pull in the driveway with the boat, they find a reason to wander over and say hi! They know I have fresh fish and know I will always share! We fillet them up immediately and half the neighborhood will have grills fired up within the hour! If there is any left over, I am the favorite guy at work on Monday mornings!

All my friends who fish the big lake are always willing to share their catch. I would be willing to bet I give fish to at least 100 different people every season. Everyone of those gets to share the joy I had of catching these fish and I get to share with people who never get truely fresh fish. A few of the people I have shared fish with have eventually come fishing with me and have now experienced catching them. Some of those now have their own boats and share their catch with others just as I did with them.

If anyone out there is putting their Great lakes catch to waste, they are not a part of the group of truely tremendous fisherman and sportsman that I share the lake with every weekend.

All legitimate points by fishdog above, not to mention, it makes little sense to throw most salmon caught in the great lakes back after a fight as the mortality rate is so high. The majority of these fish are in their last year of there life and will die in september regardless. Additionally, we are harvesting a managed put-and-take fishery.
