Got to the launch @ 9:00 pm with my stepson... wanted to get 1/2 hour in or so... I noticed quite a few boats cruising around the pier head as we were heading out.... I let out a fire tiger and as I was letting it out bam... a 28 inch walleye couldn't believe it.... Last time I was with my wife getting a little dark and bam 25 inch walleye...
I don't know much about how to catch these buggers.... but man are they good to eat... Does anyone have any suggestions... I'm thinking of doing this night fishing once in awhile ... Types of baits to use... how far back should the lines be... should you use a light... etc...
Any help will be appreciated...

I'm thinking you've got have most of the equation figured out. 1) Around the pier heads at dusk and after. 2) Decent sized stick bait (Husky Jerk 12's, floating Raps 11's & 13's, Smithwicks, Thundersticks). 3) Slow down your speed (the fish hit as you were letting line out and trolling at reg salmon speed).
Now all you need to do is lay out a spread diff lengths back, and see which they prefer.
Good luck!

Tell him to check the regs!! Open all year on Lower Peninsula Great Lakes (pg #8 of the fishing guide).
Opened today (Sat) for inland lakes and rivers on the lower.

Is that inland waters or Great Lakes waters?
I'd argue that the inland reg's end where the beach is...any have a definitive on this?

Yep you are right. Draw a line across the channel beach to beach...anything outside of that line is open year round.

Ooops, I shoulda given some thought to the Great Lake vs inland question. I thought Kozlov said he was out in front of the piers.
My opinion is that the imaginary line from one beach head across the channel to the other beach head.
For future ref. I pulled up this post by Boehr on just this subject:

Fished the pier heads until around 11:30 pm fire tiger husky jerk brought in 1 nice walleye 25 inches or so... 4 other boats out there... they followed us in... They said they got nothing....at the launch... Two of the boats look like to be a husband and wife team...
thats my report...
p.s. it was foggy and cold

i remember the double orange crush (spoons) was the hot ticket last year along with lemon ice. not sure if it's early yet or what..
as far as walleye, 1-2.2mph 60'+ leads body baits or small spoons. my best ones are a perch hot n tot (small size) and a jr. deep thunderstick old perch pattern. others are reef runners, bombers and spitfire minnows.
