Anyone know if the gills have moved into the shallows to spawn yet(SE,MI)?
Thinking tomorrow afternoon may be the day. Or is it still too cold??

It depends upon several things such as the lake, actual weather and wind dirrection. But in general, the big bulls will bed year around in 6-18 fow and sometimes deeper and of course shallower. My general rule is to look for the apple blossoms around the first of May and during the full moon. Then look for the full moon in June and that's when they will be heaviest. I have see a few small sun fish on beds in 6-12" of water. I have also caught some nice ones in the shallows, with a dark bottom out of the wind and in the sun. If you have never tried rubber spiders on a flyrod you should. I can catch 6-1 against someone using live bait. No messing with rebaiting the hook and the fish absolutely slam the spider. Works best on a calm day when they can really see it. Also, if you find a lake with Redears look for a weedier bottom. The redears will blend in with the bottom and all you may notice is a slight depression in the weeds. If you hang around a few minutes the fish will move back to the beds. Look for the red "ear" because their green color blends them into the weeds very easily. This next part is the secret to catching tough redears on the beds. Use the smallest leaches that you can find. Use a small hook and a split shot that will hold the leach in the redear's bed. The fish will become so frustrated that some thing is in its bed that it will blow and try to push it out finally it will pick it up to move it and you have him. Good luck out there.

I have not had any luck thus far for gills on my parents lake, also in oakland county, but haven't tried for them so much.

I did reasonably well last weekend in SE Michigan on a HUron River impoundment catching several 6-8" gills/pumpkinseeds in <2 fow - so they must be starting their move in.

Heck, I went to my g-mas house out on Lakeville lake on Easter Sunday, caught a bunch of good keepers, right off the shore. It was a blast.:fish:

I was out after work today catching them off shore at our neighborhoods beach lot. I had quite a few real nice ones. Put up a decent fight to. The best part was the pike that was in feeding on them. Took me for a ride. I was wondering "how big could a gill be?". Then he jumped out of the water and snaped my line. Spent the next hour walking up and down the shore looking for him. :dizzy: Good time either way.:)

Not yet, at least on my pond. No beds yet, won't be long. I've caught a few on my fly rod, :coolgleam

No gills on beds yet in Branch CO. The water needs to be warmer, but they are moving into the shallows to enjoy the warmer water there, Mothers Day weekend is always prime time for gills on the fly rod. Very few things are more fun than a hog gill on a fly rod!
