Last summer I lost several lunker when setting the hook. I genereally use 10-14lb flourocarbon. I usually was fishing with Yamamoto grub on a 1/8 ounce offset jig, or a worm rigged texas with no weigth. Am I setting the hook too hard. Should I be using stronger line? Should I be using braid. I seem to get more bites on the flouro, but i'm sick of loosing all the big ones. I always retie my knots. Lines used are: P line, Yozuri
Thanks for the help

i've found w/ pure flouro its very important to wet your knots and also check the last 2 feet of you line for nics and abrasions.
the worst i've seen for this was berkley vanish. try pline flouro-coated too. very good line IMHO

Always use a palomar knot with the floro, and loosen your drag. I had the same problem last season until I did both of these. Problems went away and I didnt loose any more fish due to line breaking. I was only using 6lb and 8 lb as well. With the floro you have little stretch so the snap from the hook set is a ton of shock on that knot. You can also try to just lean back on the rod instead of snapping it to set the hook if you dont want to loosen the drag.

How heavy of a rod are you using? If the rod is really stiff, this could be why you are breaking off fish.

I ran into the same thing with the vanish last year. I was also using a palomar knot.

I always use a palomar knot. I generally have a medium action for the weightless worm rig, or a medium heavy for the others. I don't have the problem on my jerkbaits or crankbaits or ever spinnerbaits, but I like casting out the weightless soft plastic and letting it fall slowly, when I see that line take off I set the hook pretty hard because I also lost fish from poor hooksets.

#6 No knot breaks until it slips.

It's vital that all knots be drawn securely. If the knot is lubricated (dipped in water or moistened with saliva), it will draw down better.

Also critical is the number of turns you make around the standing line. The improved clinch knot, for example, should have five turns around the main line for lines testing roughly 8X to 6 pounds. If you use 6-pound line or less to tie this knot and make only four turns, you won't have enough turns around the standing line to keep the knot from slipping. And if you make six turns (I recommend five), you'll have too many turns to draw the knot properly to keep it from slipping.

i don't think berkley vanish is bad. i put it on my rod for steelies this spring.8 lb. i never had a break off, and i caught over 40 fish. but i was using a 10'6 st. croix 8wt. rod so that might have helped alittle. but i think it's really good strong line. How long has the line been on your reels? if the reels are exposed to alot of sun, like sitting in the sun that will put weak spots in your line also. thats my 2 cents

I like to set my drag a little lighter than some people might. I use spiderwire and have never had that problem. If I hear my drag slip when I set the hook, I know I've got a heavy one on.

Might wanna also check the eyes on your rod. If you have a sharp edge it will put a significant weak spot in your line. Also the edge of your spool and sometimes even the bail. If it just happens on those hooks, make sure the eyes on the hooks aren't rusted or have any jagged edges. Just a thought. If ya figure it out let us know. Sounds kinda wierd.

Gamma line, palomar knots, swing away. Never break them off.

I think you are just setting the hook too hard. Last year i had a smallie around 24inches eat my tube. Well i gave reeled down and gave him a good on and the line just broke. Medium rod so that wasnt the problem. If its not any sharp edges to anything than i would guess just too hard of a hook set.

You must really be crankin' em! I use 8 lb. for smallies & never have a problem. Could be anything. Better luck this year.

With low-stretch line, all you have to do is lift the rod to set the hook. Also, keep the drag set low -- too low is better than too tight.

I don't get how so many people have problems with Vanish.

I use 8lb. line as leader on my jigging rods. I have landed eyes over 10 lbs. with no problem.

I use 17 lb. Vanish for all my open water harnesses. Landing hundreds of fish over the years. I have never had one fail me. I do check the harness after every catch to make sure there are no nics. IF there is I retie.

I tie palamar and improved cinch knots only. I make sure I lube each knot and cinch them down to the eyelet everytime.

Like I said never a failure.

I only had a problem with the vanish one time. Brand new spool 5 breaks.. I have it on some other rods and used through out last summer and never had any problems. Bad spool of line? The biggest problem is it just happened to be during a tourny.
