Do not call the DNR, Mud Puppies are out of season right now!! It opens the last Sat. in May till Nov. 15th. They are really quite common. I have caught them while fishing for other things.

if by reward you mean a ticket, then yes.

I would recommend taking it back where ya found it and letting it go.

Besides a pet, what other use do mudpuppies have?

Mudpuppies are just another kind of salamander. They are important to the ecosystem because they are an indicator species like most amphibians.

Good man.:)
For your pennance I want you to dig out your 2006 fishing guide and read all the general regulations. Then I want you to study the "Exceptions By County" section for each county you call home. In your case that would be Wayne, Monroe, Mason, Mecosta and Lenawee counties. When you are done with that you shall move on to peruse the trout regulations for each river in your home counties, and thourghly understand the river classes, tackle restrictions, seasons and creel limits for each. There will be a test in your PM box in the morning.;)

Last week while up in the U.P. I watched a MudPuppy actually eat a small lamprey!
Maybe we need more mudpuppies in the great lakes!
