my take on the 2006 winter/spring fishing season on the mighty AS, as far as catching goes heres a catch report.

It sucks. plain and simple. fish arent there, a few small pushes in March, a few in April. A few on the gravel, (most all at highbanks) some stacked up below the dam..so before anyone says "when i was there, we did great" you timed it right, congrats! But on a whole:sad: Now i make these judgements on over 70 HOURS of fishing that river since the 25 th of March, and another 50 hours before that now multiply that by at least 2, sometimes 3 of manhours fishing it. thats a buttload of hours, for very meager results. Floating over the entire stretch you can count on steelhead shooting out from behind logs, off the slow sand where there warming up, pushing them out of little slots, but I AM NOT SEEING THIS. I can only hope mother nature is going to provide a late push and May is going to the month, my gut says the river isnt going happen this year. I HOPE I'M WRONG!

Now for a fishing report:
The river is and will always be my favorite. I've had a few days where i never saw another boat and some prime bank holes hadnt been fished for 2 days.
the river is still beautiful and full of furred and featherd wildlife. There is always at least one fish caught and even the suckers that showed up provided a little entertainment. A concern of mine is last week the river was flat out dirty, very silty and visibility was cut in half from normal. The river was in the low 10's and had been that way for a week..so..could it be from the 3 jetboats who were flying up and down the river washing the mud into the river??? i dont know, but....

I didnt fish saturday or today, the river is at what i call prime (48 degrees)
so maybe the weekend guys have a good report and the fish are jumping onto there hooks, and there was no need to clean them off the gravel with the hookset at the end of every drift on the gravel.

I agree. The spring run this season has been very screwy, I missed the best fishing which was in March, I was on the wrong side of the state. I don't think it's gonna bust open anymore then what's there right now, normally, no matter the weather, it's cranking by mid-April. The weather this spring was warm earlier, and we had two big gushes of water that brought in not a whole lot. As much as I hate to say this, the Au Sable is in rough shape right now, I've never had such a rough, frustrating spring. Like Sprig, the Au Sab is and ALWAYS will be my favorite river to fish steelhead in the state, tight-lines.
